Built in alcove shelves

Hi I've just moved into a flat with built in alcoves either side of the chimney breast. My problem is the shelving in the alcoves doesn't match. Also, they are painted with white gloss - not great. Any ideas for updating them please?

If they are basically sound, but just not aesthetically pleasing, I'd prime them with something like Zinsser 1-2-3 and then paint them the same colour as the walls. If they need a more major revamp and you're vaguely handy I'd investigate one of the online companies that will make new shelving for you to order, you'd just need to fit it.
