Would I be crazy to get carpet?

I live in a bungalow so I've no carpet at all so no experience of upkeep etc. Went to look for a new wooden floor and fell in love with their carpets. We have a solid fuel stove in the living room, plus a tween who loves messy crafts/ eating/ drinking/ spilling etc. Not sure if I could be bothered banning eating /shoes etc.
I'm removing a floor I mistakenly put in, high gloss laminate. It was so expensive and totally not suitable for a busy room. I really don't want to make another expensive mistake.
I don't like patterned carpet, the one I'm thinking of is a herringbone effect in a beige colour.
Any thoughts/advice?

We have laminate in heavy traffic areas (hall way & dining room which has patio doors to the garden) and carpet everywhere else. No major upkeep, even when DC were smaller, although we have never worn outside shoes in the house. They come off as soon as we come in from outside.

The biggest carpet spoiling we had on a carpet in a previous house was dog diarrhoea, but that would have been equally a nightmare with laminate anyway!

I wouldn’t pick beige if you are a shoes on indoors household though.

Huge mistake getting beige carpets, let alone with a messy teen.

I've just had the whole house recarpeted, no tween but a very messy dog.
I chose a mid brown, not too light and not too dark, it's probably leaning towards beige but has a brown fleck to it.
We're a shoes off house.
House feels immediately warmer and cosier.
Let's face it, if you spill something on a wood floor you'd immediately clean it up, it's the same with carpet.
We have a stock of carpet cleaner ready for action.
As for your tween crafting, get a cheap shower curtain to lay on the floor when it looks like it might get messy.
I was like you, torn between a wood floor and carpet, I'm glad I went for carpet.

I put carpet down in my house and hated it so much I ripped it all up and put down laminate. That with rugs is perfectly cosy. Carpet was just difficult to clean, and I hated it. Apart from on stairs where it minimises noise.

Fuel stoves can be messy so I wouldn't have any pale carpet near them.

Why would it be crazy to get carpet? Lots of people have carpet.

Obviously if you have it, it's better to take your shoes off in the house, otherwise it will get dirty (but probably the same goes for laminate/ hard floors anyway? They still get dirty).

Despite my youngsters trying to convince me to have hard floor I still prefer carpet. Warm and cosy. Just choose a colour that will hide stains unless you want to be driven crazy with the slightest marks.
