Stair runner advice needed

So I’ve moved into a house that has horrendous carpet. We’ve ended up pulling it up and want to paint the stairs and have a runner.
Does anyone have any advice about what material would be good? I have a cat that would pull at anything like jute, and I have two kids so need something that can be cleaned relatively easily.
I know some people don’t love runners because of the dust, but I HATED carpet on the stairs and really don’t want carpet anywhere I don’t have to have it.
Any companies or specific materials that you can recommend? Thank you!!

We have a stair runner which is made out of a sisal style carpet.

It's very hard wearing and we used it to carpet the upstairs landing too.

We have a cat but so far she hasn't clawed at it!

We also have a carpet clawing cat. We’ve got a flatweave runner with a very tight weave and she (mostly) doesn’t go for it - I think it’s too tight.

On the downside it is slippery and has worn badly - recommend you look for 3 ply if getting flatweave as that should wear better than the crap we got.

We also have 2 carpet shredding DCats so we're planning to rip up the stair carpet, paint the stairs and put some grips on the treads.
