After a new ottoman bed. Sick of spending a lot of money on things and them being rubbish quality. Has anyone got an ottoman bed that they could recommend and have had a few years already. Thanks for any help.

Nik2879 · 12/10/2024 12:49

@ThePinkBiscuit less than £800 if possible.

Ikea's Malm ottoman bed is really good. Tonnes of space underneath. I bought a super-king one years ago, but they look to have stopped selling it in that size.

If you do want an Ikea bed, get an Ikea family card and buy the bed by 27th October to get the discount offer.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 12/10/2024 13:55

If that's including a mattress it's optimistic.

Nik2879 · 12/10/2024 19:49

Dont really want one from ikea. Want a nice padded headboard. Maybe a blue colour. Thanks for the recommendations though.

@Nik2879 - I'm sorry, I can't help with an ottoman bed suggestion, but I totally second you on not getting an IKEA bed. Their sizing is so odd, and not consistent across countries.

We have one from John Lewis, it’s a year old and has been fine (lovely in fact). But I can’t see it online now 😞

they do have this one which we have had in a non ottoman version for four + years and it’s also fab: www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-grace-ottoman-storage-upholstered-bed-frame-king-size/p4545085

Wait actually they do still have our bed, but for some reason it doesn’t come up when you search for ottoman. I would say try the fabrics though as they were quite different colours/lightness in real life:

@He11oKitty thanks so much. Always better to a recommendation so you know its good quality. Everything looks good in the shops. Made that mistake with our sofa.

I think sofas are harder to choose to be honest because they are both structure and upholstery, but while the comfort of the bed is also massively affected by the mattress iyswim.

Mattresses are hard to choose too! We use memory foam ones on it and on our guest bed - the non ottoman Jl one (I love it and guests ask what we use but my husband finds the mattress less comfortable these days so might be time to change). Good luck and send a photo if you get one! They have some nice blue colours.

Really happy with our Loaf bed 5 years on… but it’s more than £800

bergamotorange · 19/10/2024 17:20

I think the issue is for a good ottoman bed you do have to pay a lot, so it is often better to get something more simple that then lasts longer. Ottoman beds are more complicated than other beds due to the lifting mechanism.

DD was doing a paper about "fast furniture" (the furniture equivalent of fast food) recently, and it seems Malm have quite a negative history. In July 2015, IKEA issued a warning in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland to customers to secure the Malm chests of drawers and wardrobes firmly to the wall using free kits distributed by the company, after the deaths of two young children in the U.S. when the furniture tipped over and fell on them. Since 1989, there were three other deaths from other similar appliance models tipping over, and 14 incidents of Malm chests tipping over, resulting in four injuries. In June 2016, after a third toddler died in the U.S., IKEA recalled all Malm dressers as well as several similar models which posed a tipping danger if not secured to the wall with the supplied kit. Europe and China were initially excluded from the recall, but added in later. IKEA settled wrongful death lawsuits with the families of the children. Maybe there were concerns about the safety of the super king bed too, or maybe the Malm range had simply had so much negative publicity (rightly so) that IKEA wanted to distance itself from these products.

Have you looked at Warren Evans? I bought my mattress from there recently and went to their workshop/showroom in North London. I was tempted by their ottoman beds - the base is solid rather than slats. Couldn't justify buying the bed after investing in the mattress (which is so comfortable!), but it's on my list for when my bed frame needs updating.

There is also this brand called Dream Home Store, which is similar to Dusk but is very affordable in comparison. I have an ottoman bed from them, which works well without any noise. I am also thinking of buying their bookcase. https://dreamhomestore.co.uk/collections/bookcases

We got ours from Naturalmat and definitely the best we’ve had. Cost more than £800 though.
