Bathroom wall colour?

Our bathroom is being redone currently. We need to decide what colours to paint it in between the tiling being completed and the bathroom suite and furniture being fitted. This will be next weekend. The sanitaryware is white. The vanity will be dark blue. Tiling is greige. The ceiling will be Dulux Timeless.

What colour do you think for the 70cm high area of wall above the tiles all round apart from in the shower??

I've seen a nice bathroom wallpaper in wide stripes of dark blue and greige, or if it was me, I might use masking tape and paint the stripes.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 23/09/2024 06:08

Thank you for the suggestion. A blue could work, but I don't think we want stripes. It's difficult to describe, but the room doesn't have a typical flat ceiling and stripes would throw everything off.

Why don't you use the same colour as the ceiling? Keep it simple.

wigywhoo · 23/09/2024 06:21

F & B Arsenic - bluet green.

Because I'd like to use something different!

I see about the stripes.
In that case, I might go the same blue as the vanity unit, or maybe a non striped bathroom wallpaper, using dark blue and greige in the pattern.
You could also introduce other colours in the wall paper, according to taste.
What colours are your towels?

MissSkegness1951 · 23/09/2024 09:31

White

TizerorFizz · 23/09/2024 09:40

It’s going to look like a filling in a sandwich. I’d definitely use the ceiling colour. Use towels for more colour.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 24/09/2024 07:50

It would only look like the filling in a sandwich if the tiles and the ceiling were the same colour surely?

@MotherOfGodWeeFella can you post pics of the tiles and unit, to get some idea of how the colours are going to work together? I'm struggling to visualise dark blue and greige and what could work with those? Ta.

SwedishEdith · 24/09/2024 09:47

What shade of dark blue? And what aspect is the room? I'd think something like Borrowed Light. You've got dark blue and greige so you need a colour to bring those together.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 24/09/2024 19:30

We've got Borrowed Light in another room. It's north facing. I fancy wallpaper, even a mural, but DP will probably veto it as he just can't visualise things and won't want to wallpaper newly plastered walls.

Tiling has started today so will be good to get a feeling for how it's going to look. I've had a sleepless night, partly because it's an old house and there are features we want to preserve so I've been worrying about some of that. The place is a tip and filthy after the plastering too.

We've had to make so many decisions already, I feel I don't have much energy for the fun stuff.

We have white tiles to waist height, a row of blue, white and black tiles then a dark navy blue that matches the blue in the tiles then white ceiling.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 25/09/2024 17:27

The tilers have done the more straightforward half tiled walls, taking lots of care to get the height just right and the centre the layout, etc so I'm feeling much better about things. Still none the wiser on paint colour! An awful lot of neutrals recommended for north facing rooms look magnolia to me!

As you haven’t chosen white for the ceiling and Timeless is the “go to” neutral, how can you mix it with anything much? Another neutral will look odd with that and griege tiles. Wall paper might be ok but make sure it’s ok for a bathroom. It feels too busy for me.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 05/10/2024 12:54

We've gone for F&B Cook's Blue for the walls. It looks good. Too bland with just off white walls and ceiling, but Timeless works well with the light in there. It's an arts and crafts house.

We put non-bathroom wallpaper in one of our bathrooms and used decorators varnish to seal it. It has been there 5 years now and still looks great and any splashes wipe off very easily. There are different finishes depending how much sheen you want, to get the least sheen use two coats of the satin and one coat of the dead flat. Brilliant stuff.

Tbh people worry too much about wallpaper in bathrooms. We had wallpaper in there before with no issues and it wasn't varnished. My mum has always had wallpaper in her bathroom. If you

Anyway the blue is on the walls and looking great. I've got a few tiny touch ups to do plus masking the tops of the walls for a crisp line and a triple window to sand, prime and paint in satinwood - not looking forward to that!
