Help me choose a colour for my living room

All my walls are white, I have white shutters and a mid grey leather sofa (which I can't afford to replace)
I was thinking of painting the fireplace wall either a dark green or dark mulberry shade and have mulberry & green cushions. Would that work?
I have silver & white accessories so was going to swap to gold to warm the room up a bit.

I can never make things look as nice as I want to do need help!!!

I think you can make it work with the grey sofa, I would bring in some warm lighting and natural textures- rattan/ wood/ lush plants etc
I think a deep green or mulberry will work on the wall but I’d bring in a few other colours around the room too maybe a slate grey/ mustard/ green and mulberry to stop it feeling one dimensional.
Maybe some colourful artwork on the walls too?
It’s hard marrying the cool grey/white tones from a few years ago with the warmer colors more in style now but it definitely can be done.

There's no such thing as a truly neutral grey. So is your sofa pinky-grey, bluey-grey or yellowy-grey? Then do you want a restful harmonising colour scheme or a zingy contrasting scheme? Say your sofa is a bluey-grey, then for harmonising go for a similar blue colour scheme (hold samples/swatches next to the sofa to get the right blue). For contrasting go with orange/brown. You can work out harmonising/contrasting colours by looking up "colour wheel".

You need to ask yourself the same questions about your flooring colour too.

Doesn't sound great. What about two contrasting colours?

UnimaginableWindBird · 21/09/2024 14:09

I would look for a lovely thing (blanket, art, maybe a cushion) that picks up the same grey as your sofa but also includes richer colours. And then choose the rest of your colour scheme around that, thinking about the light and general atmosphere of your room. There are some lovely Welsh blankets with grey in the colour mix here: https://www.felinfach.com/collections/welsh-blankets

I absolutely hate grey and want to move away from it as much as possible so I'm loathed to buy anything with any grey in it 🙈

I'd like a warming feel not cool tones. Rich deep colour preferably and keep the other walls white?

Why do you want to keep the other walls white?

Cherrycupcake24 · 21/09/2024 15:22

Because I have no idea what else to do with them other than white, I'm really rubbish at this 😩

I think green would look nice with it

Emotionalsupporthamster · 21/09/2024 15:36

I have a very dark green on one wall and white on the others and I really like it. I’m not a fan of an all dark living room so the balance works well for me. Other accents around the room are lots of wood (walnut), tan leather, and some little bits of orange, mustard and blues in art and accessories.

Colours that go with grey: mint, coral, yellow, pale blue, brownish pink, teal, terracotta, griege, lilac, orange, red, navy. Do you like any of those colours?

I wouldn't advise you paint another wall a different colour but that's just my preference.

Here are some images which might help to get a warmer feel. I like the neutral/gold tones. Much better than white.

@crumpet they all look cool rooms to me, I'm looking for a dark wall where the fireplace is, I'm just looking for ideas how to make it all work and create the warm cosy feel I'm after

You can paint or dye leather sofas different colours and it’s supposed to be relatively easy to do with good results

SwedishEdith · 21/09/2024 16:31

What about something like Portland Stone which comes in different shades? You could have lighter ones on some walls and the darker one on the fireplace wall. You could get them colour matched.

SwedishEdith · 21/09/2024 16:31

One aspect is the room?

Longlist · 21/09/2024 16:36

You could paint the sofa legs a pale colour - natural wood or white. It sounds like nothing, but I did this, and it gave a surprisingly different feel to my grey thing!

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/09/2024 16:52

This is mine - it looks better when you see it all but I went for
The dark wall with a creamy colour on the others rather than white - a bit warmer

I don't like the sound of a mulberry fire place

I would be inclined to paint the walls a colour like green and fireplace white (or black)

Cherrycupcake24 · 22/09/2024 12:30

@Longlist Im definitely going to do that, fab idea! I hate the colour legs almost as much as the sofa itself
