Talk to me about lamps

I'm moving from a very hot and sunny place to a very cold and dark one soon, and I haven't had to think about light (or lack of) in a long time!

I want to set up my new home in a way that's cosy and lovely, and I think lighting is going to be key for me.

What tips do you have for making the light in your home as nice as possible?

In the house that we’ve recently sold we just had side lights in the alcoves in the living room on in the evenings although the main light was also on a dimmed switch. There was also dimmer switches in the bedroom ceiling lights. Throws in the winter over the sofas. Candles

When we finally move to our new home which is bigger to make it feel cosy I’ve purchased quite a few lamps and rugs. But I’ve decided to hold off buying anything else until we live there because then I can workout if it would fit with the decor.

Warm white bulbs, not bright white.

A house near me has bright white downlighters in the living room ceiling and it looks like a dentist's office - so clinical and the antithesis of cosy.

Lamps, not ceiling lights. Even if dimmable they're never as cosy as lamps. They're for tasks only in my house 🤣
