Should we put a toilet in the loft conversion?

My DH (a builder) has created a small room in our loft, with building control approval. Our roof is an awkward shape so the new room is not large. We could squeeze in a toilet but it would be half under the eaves. It also means the bed would not be facing the window with its stunning view. We are tempted to leave out the toilet. We will have a 4 bedroom house with 2 toilets. I am desperate for opinions! Thanks.

If you are using the loft as a bedroom it’s needs a loo

jetbot · 08/09/2024 18:09

yes i would

the idea of having to go downstairs to the toilet in the night… no

zaxxon · 08/09/2024 18:09

How many people in the house?

Cakeonthefloor · 08/09/2024 18:22

We will use it as a guest room. Currently 4 people in the house.

this will be for guests?

then 100% yes to the toilet!!!

jetbot · 08/09/2024 18:25

althoughhow often will anyone be staying there?

BeatrizBoniface · 08/09/2024 18:27

No need for another toilet, there are two in the house! It's better to have a lovely view.

Moltenpink · 08/09/2024 18:28

Yes, going downstairs (especially steep loft ones) in the middle of the night won’t be pleasant.

Just4thisthreadtoday · 08/09/2024 18:29

I would put a toilet in there, yes

spend a bit more time finding the best place for it, probably determined by plumbing though tbh.

shame about the view. But it's often not good when you take into consideration the height of the bed anyway.

Flossflower · 08/09/2024 18:40

You must have a toilet on the same level. A relation of mine was looking at houses. She didn’t want one with a 4th bedroom in the loft and no bathroom. She went for another one with the 4th bedroom in the loft and a very small en-suite. You need to think about selling in the future.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/09/2024 18:40

If it's a guest room, how often is someone actually going to stand and look at the view. And for how long?
I'd say a toilet was almost essential - it'll be a long way down a steep staircase in the middle of the night otherwise more than once in my case.

Seaweed42 · 08/09/2024 18:42

It'll be dark at night in the bedroom. And first thing in the morning for half the year.

The view can still be seen from the room.

Put in the loo.

justasking111 · 08/09/2024 19:00

Ours has a fab view but no room for the bed on opposite wall because I chimney. It's fine. Meant we could have a loo sink and shower across a tiny landing. More privacy for guests and they don't disturb anyone else

BeatrizBoniface · 08/09/2024 19:00

At some point you look out of the window. A view is important. In all honesty, two toilets in a house is plenty.

nothing is stopping them from looking out the window! 😆

DrinkElephants · 08/09/2024 19:12

If it’s for guests then definitely a toilet

I never said there was.

BiggerBoat1 · 08/09/2024 19:15

You absolutely definitely need a toilet.

Spomb · 08/09/2024 19:15

Definitely a toilet. Guests will want a toilet over a view. We have a similar set up and it’s much nicer for everyone for guests to have their own bathroom. If they’ve come to visit you, I doubt they’ll be spending all their time in bed looking at the view - well they’d be pretty rude if they did!!

So i don’t really get your point

JC03745 · 08/09/2024 19:33

Presumably people are in the room to change and sleep- not stand around or sit in bed eyeing the view for hours? Yes, a view is nice, but given the choice, I'd prefer a loo! You could always get a photo of the view, blow it up and have it as a massive wall print.

We have a toilet under the stairs and the back of it slopes away. We managed a tiny, corner hand basin, but there are combo ones which take up even less space like the pic.

Edit to say that if you have a sliding pocket type door to the toilet, you'll save 1m2 of floor space.

Note OP says "We will have a 4 bedroom house with 2 toilets."

OP, I think you must have an en suite in the bedroom if it is for guests. How small exactly is the bedroom? If you add an en suite will it be a very cramped space?

BeatrizBoniface · 08/09/2024 19:38

jetbot · 08/09/2024 19:26

It refers to the OP and her consideration of the view re position of the bed sans toilet.

BeatrizBoniface · 08/09/2024 19:40

The view was raised by the OP as part of the consideration, which I understand.
Standing around looking at it for hours may happen, but I think it's more about how pleasant the room is, which was possibly the OP's point.

EPankhurst · 08/09/2024 19:58

They're not usually in bed to look at a view. The curtains are normally drawn across, it's dark, they're there to sleep.

Put a loo in, your guests will thank you!
