Should the painter/decorator have included the skirting boards?

I was quoted £300 (including the paint, all one colour, white) to spruce up the room (over existing anaglypta wallpaper). I've just been to see the finished job and he hasn't done the skirting boards, sills etc and they now look very yellow!
I didn't agree this, but assumed this would be standard. What do you think? (And "yes", I paid in advance.... 🙄)

No, not really. £300 including paint is quite cheap.
You should have discussed exactly what was included before he started.

I think you needed to specify that you expected him to paint the walls AND the woodwork.

You would have needed a tin of gloss paint as well as emulsion if you wanted the paintwork done.

No I wouldn’t expected it to be included. Skirtings and sills needs diff prep and diff paint from walls. And for £300… that’s on the low side

Disclaimer - I do all our decorating myself except for plastering.

heldinadream · 07/09/2024 19:00

Well they would be painted in different paint to the walls so if you only negotiated one type of paint, you only negotiated walls.
But perhaps the decorator should have sussed that you didn't know this and spelled it out to you.

Ach - typical “you’re an idiot” Mumsnet replies. Yes, you should have something in writing - but it’s not unreasonable to assuming painting a room includes ceilings and woodwork.

99RedBallonz · 07/09/2024 19:01

In my experience they usually ask if you want the woodwork done too. If he didn't ask and you didn't mention it, then perhaps he assumed it was just the walls.

I don't live in the property so he came round with me discussing what needed to be done. All verbal.
Yes, I agree with PP I was naive, I obviously should have asked him to set out the quote in writing, detailing exactly what it included. Live and learn!
@MrsKwazi @heldinadream there wasn't any "prep" except me clearing out and cleaning the room. He's just painted over the existing anaglypta (which was what we agreed). 1 day job.
Thank you everyone x
