Where's the best place for carpets?

I'm about to re carpet the lounge and bedroom and have been to CarpetRight to look at carpets and also to discuss fitting - quite pricey! Where are the best places to get good quality carpets & fitting service at a fair price? I've also seen some online places but just not sure if that's even a good idea.

I ended up going with a local firm - they were flexible, reliable and helpful and very sensible about advising on things that actually made it less expensive rather than more.

LadeOde · 21/08/2024 21:17

Thats the kind of service i'm hoping but there's no way of knowing if they'd be like them before committing to them. I've also been to a local place and to be honest they were a b it nonplussed. The lady i met at carpetright today was absolutely brilliant and spent ages talking me through different carpets, giving suggestions on what would work with different areas and was very flexible, BUT they're expensive.

Carpets are really expensive these days. Carpetright quoted us £600 for a 3x4m bedroom. We eventually found a local company to do it for around £300 - but the range wasn’t great. Not very helpful but just to echo it’s not easy.

LadeOde · 21/08/2024 21:36

That's the other thing i noticed about the local shop i visited, very limited range! this is not looking good. There's also a place called 'Carpet Warehouse' online that seems to have a wide range at what looks like very low prices, wonder of anyone has used them?

Have used Tapi twice now & they have been good. Have a huge range, can order free samples online & do the whole picture it in your room online too. They usually have good offers too, think at the mo they are doing some 50%off if getting underlay, which you'll likely be getting anyway.

LadeOde · 21/08/2024 21:58

@Dancingfairydreams It so happens i booked an appointment with TAPI this evening, never heard of them before so I'm so glad you said they're good. Will see them next week.

I think CarpetRight have gone into administration and Tapi have bought a few stores, I want my stairs and landing done and was thinking of trying Tapi

DeliciousApples · 21/08/2024 21:59

That's right, carpetright went bust.
Tapi are fine. My pal used them last year.

LadeOde · 21/08/2024 22:01

ShockI was in our local CarpetRight this afternoon and they didn't say a word about going into administration. I guess that means they might not be the best place to make a huge commitment right now. They had such lovely carpets though.

We've had them do laminate & carpet & found them reasonable, had quick availability & the fitters were very good. Good luck

Bilbonne · 21/08/2024 22:01

Good to hear Tapi are good as we have one locally. Hope yours all goes ok OP

LadeOde · 21/08/2024 22:02

Thank God for MN, i'd never have known they have gone into administration. The only thing i found peculiar when i visited is that they have a bed section and they said all the bed have been sold off, every single one which i thought was strange but they said no more.

It was in the news about Carpetright about a month ago, I would be very wary of using them as carpet is something you order and pay for in advance, it's ok if you are buying stuff in the shop to take away

WonderingWanda · 21/08/2024 22:08

Trago Mills if you're in the South West.

Ilovemyshed · 21/08/2024 22:11

Find a decent small independent. Far better value.

LadeOde · 21/08/2024 22:12

Thanks @WonderingWanda unfortunately not I'm in South East.

If you can find an independent filter then you could try buying carpet online. They can send out samples and are cheap because they sell roll ends.

If it's one of the stores that's still open then it means it's one of the stores bought by Tapi that will continue to trade. For now they're keeping them under the Carpetright brand.

The ones that couldn't be rescued have already closed.

Don't pull your custom based on incomplete/bad information.

"However, the Carpetright brand, intellectual property, 54 stores and two warehouses have been saved by rival firm Tapi Carpets. This deal has also saved 300 jobs, but a further 1,000 former employees now face redundancy. If you're affected, see our Redundancy help guide.

Over 200 Carpetright stores have now closed – check if yours is on the list PwC has confirmed that 211 Carpetright stores in the UK that haven't been sold to Tapi have closed for good. You can click on the dropdown below for the full list.

Any UK-based Carpetright stores NOT on the list reopened on Friday 26 July. Tapi says these will continue to use the Carpetright brand for the foreseeable future."

😀😃

Ohmychristmick · 22/08/2024 09:22

Cheapest way is to buy a roll end and find an independent fitter.

Rainbowbrite83 · 22/08/2024 21:14

We used Tapi too

LadeOde · 24/08/2024 07:50

I'm so glad to see that TAPI has been used by lots of posters. It was by chance i came across them having no idea whether they were any good and booked an appointment so I'm looking forward to them coming next week. Thanks all.

Local firm.
Our whole house is done in offcurs/remants, but 2 of 3 bedrooms are the same colour, and the other is so incrementally different that you can't tell it's not the same.

Nannyfannybanny · 24/08/2024 09:06

It was on the news about 6 weeks ago, carpet right were going under and looking for a buyer. My local one has closed. We recently did our hall. Went to the little family firm that did all the carpets before, very good, but expensive. Ended up in Fludes.
