Fitted wardrobes cost

Sharps has just quoted £8k for 4.5m, 7 door fitted wardrobe, shaker style, mix of hanging, drawers & shelves.

Is that way too much? Is it worth trying a local carpenter? Sharps can book me in for a fit in 3 weeks and I don’t want to wait loads of time with someone else as we’re behind on lots of other decorating work, which is becoming a bummer. Would be great to get this sorted but not hugely overpay.

Ours was a more basic three door wardrobe but the local carpenter was much more reasonable for us than sharps would have been

TheFlis · 24/07/2024 15:21

That’s nearly triple what Wren quoted us for similar wardrobes and the fitting with local fitters was quoted at around a grand. We haven’t gone ahead yet though as having other work done.

We bought PAXwardobes from IKEA.Pit them up ourselves then had a carpenter come in and box them in and add handles. Cost us £1500.

Userxyd · 25/07/2024 05:52

@BG2015 was that just the carpenter cost or all in including the ikea wardrobes?

I was also going to suggest that. I'd say that, for the amount of wardrobes the OP wants, it will probably be around £2500-£3k?

Sharps are well known for being ridiculously expensive. I don't think the quality is any better either, it's still MDF after all. We have Pax wardrobes (not built in) that are nearly 20 years old and they're as good as new.

Tarantella43 · 25/07/2024 09:25

Thanks, I am looking into PAX with boxing in — good idea!

Have a look at Online Bedrooms or Fittingly. We have a 3m run of made to measure flat pack wardrobes from Online Bedrooms that cost about £2k including drawers and shelves. They look more expensive than they were

BG2015 · 25/07/2024 19:31

The PAX wardrobes cost us £900 and the rest was labour but we did have some other carpentery jobs done too

We have IKEA Pax too, still going strong after 4 years. You design them yourself with the online tool they have. DH fitted ours himself but if that's not an option you would probably still save a fortune paying someone to fit them for you

LovelyDaaling · 25/07/2024 23:33

We fitted Pax ourselves and ordered sliding doors elsewhere. Pax is brilliantly versatile. After studying the IKEA displays in store, we ordered online and it was delivered to the house. You have a year to return unused items so no worries about any over ordering. A carpenter will easily fit doors of your choice.
IKEA staff will help you put a plan together and print it out for you without pressure to buy so you can ponder it before ordering.

Another view for pax and well worth getting a design appointment if you're close to an IKEA. Ours had some good suggestions. They're great solid wardrobes, we just have ours normally but there's loads of good suggestions about boxing in etc on Instagram. I wish I'd seen them before buying ours, but I think I'd be divorced if I tried to get my husband to help redo it all now 🤣

Interested in this thread.

We looked at Pax but the sizing didn't work for us.
We need a run of around 275cms but has to be sliding doors.
The only Pax ones were 200cms.

We were thinking of using J Lewis as they do made to measure but no idea of the cost.

Out of interest, does Ikea not assemble Pax wardrobes? They advertise they will do assembly of flat packed items so I assumed that they would assemble Pax wardrobes as they are free standing.

WonderingWanda · 28/07/2024 19:20

Another vote for IKEA Pax, ours are 20 years old this year and still going strong despite 2 house moves.

ChuckleMyPeanuts · 28/07/2024 19:27

Am interested in PAX too but our wall recesses are slightly too small. Is there any easy way round this?
Those of you who had carpenters fight doors - can I ask how much you paid?

You could leave a section open. I've seen a few on instagram and it looks good (attached an example). I saw a similar one a while ago where they put handles on the drawers to match the doors.
