What colour walls with light brown / tan (ish) sofa?

We’ve just ordered this sofa. Our current wall colour will look awful with it. I’m thinking white walls, but my husband thinks that it will be too stark (and boring). Pinterest pins seem to favour a soft white. Any other suggestions? We have an oak floor and lovely wool rug that has warm tones.

photos or pins appreciated.

No. Our existing cushions will be chucked.

Brilliant white would look fab. But if DH craves colour I would go for a blue because blue is the complementary colour to brown, so they will set each off nicely. It'll be tricky to get the right type of blue. I'd guess, a pure blue not a greeny blue/teal/duck egg type and not a purply-blue. Think of the colour wheel. Your blue should be dead opposite your brown for the most striking effect.

Green was my first thought

Get the cushion that's on the photo and base your wall colour on that?

If it helps, this is our rug. Muted colours, but with hints of greeny blue. Looks quite muted in the photo

Anything from duck egg through to quite a dark teal, depending on taste. Or a very rich cream but ideal without any yellow tones and bring in blues and blue greens with cushions and accessories. We have a similar couch with walls a sort of putty colour and lots of cushions and throws in various natural tones with shades of blue, mainly natural textiles and lots of texture.
