Party Decorations

I have a big birthday coming up and want to decorate a bit. I've seen some lovely reusable paper pompoms, fans and honeycombs that you hang from the ceiling but how exactly do I do this, without it looking a mess or wrecking the paintwork?

blue tak? or command strips which shouldn't mess up the paint.

depending on the room, you could string tight wires across and then hang the decor from the wires.
