Any tips on choosing lighting fixtures and decor items that can enhance the ambiance of a small space? I want to create a cozy and comfortable environment without overwhelming the room.

It's very dependant on the room and what sort of look you want to go for. You can. Always add plants and some pictures and a mirror to pretty much any room to make it feel more cozy. Side lights are also good..like table lamps. But if there isn't much space something wall mounted might work better? Or a thin floor lamp behind a chair?

so the light is indirect and not in your face and use warm white bulbs for the best cosy intimate atmosphere.

The best thing we did lighting wise was dimmer switches. Warm white light bulbs for a cosier feel. Wall lights as well as ceiling lights, and opal light fittings give a really nice diffuse glow.

Otherwise I'd say textures. If it's a smaller space, keeping a tight colour palette, but incorporating different textures looks really good. Gives interest without overwhelming the space. One big art work rather than lots of little things will look cleaned and make the space look bigger.
