Tiles - help me choose height (pics)

Recently installed kitchen backsplash tiles and am finding them too boring (agh)... so I'm having them replaced with more colourful tiles..!

I like the current height of the tiles, however to achieve this with the new tiles I'd have to do a line of half-tiles at the bottom, like in the pic (ignore the colour difference - the half tiles are printed on paper). The tiler says this will cost the same, even though it involves a lot of tile cutting (on the plus side it will hopefully involve less patching up of plaster / paint).

Which looks better?

  1. 3 lines of tiles PLUS a line of half tiles on the bottom
  2. 3 lines of tiles

(Also, I'm keeping the tiles as a continuous-height line - not going up to the cooker hood in the middle)

May I ask why you’re not going up to the cooker hood. I think it would look better if you did. But each to their own.
I think it looks ok with half tiles.

3 and a half looks better!

Lovely tiles

Hi
I’ve just had a look at your kitchen pictures. Not sure it looks right leaving gap under the wall cabinet. Personally I’d go up to the cupboards.

3 and a half!

EmberAsh · 08/07/2024 19:32

3 and a half is a better height than 3 but I would go up to 4 because I know one tile will be cut half a mm different to another and then the pattern on those half tiles won't match.

letmeeatinpeace · 08/07/2024 19:34

Thanks for your thoughts all!

@EmberAsh we considered 4 x lines, and mocked it up but it looked too high / too close to the cupboard.

I'd go for same height. Both lovely tiles btw x

I'd go up to the cupboard, with any cut tile at the top! Theyre lovely tiles

How about option 3 - tile the entire wall? I think it would look good and perk the whole space up.
