Ideas for fireplace

We're going to block off our fireplace, may eventually get a stove but for now just looking for ideas to decorate on a low/zero budget?

So what will be there - an empty grate? Classic things to put there are pine cones, logs, candles.

If there is no grate just a big square hole, you could put some sort of decorative box/trunk there (also for storage)
