Help! Bathroom tiles

Our bathroom is finally getting overhauled in July. We need to choose what tiles to have.

I'm absolutely over faced by all the choice available. There will be a separate shower and freestanding bath so half tiling with full in the shower. We need to find something we agree on. The house is Edwardian with lots of period features. We'd like a nod to the period, but not a slavishly trad look. We also don't want to go very on trend and feel it's dated quickly.

Fine with metro type tiles, but I dislike the bevel edged ones. I wanted porcelain marble look, but DP hated them. We don't like the panels you can have instead of tiles. Help please!

Definitely don't have panels. Have you been to a store to look in person? We have had two bathrooms done recently and both times it helped me to go and browse a store and picture the tiles in place, rather than just look online.

If in doubt, simplify.

Just get some nice, plain, classic white tiles.

The tiles are not going to define your personality - neat and clean is a great look.

Ditto.

Have a look at Mandarin Stone and Boutique Stone. I loved some of the smaller glazed tiles at Mandarin Stone and both do larger format tiles which are good for the floor as have minimal grout m

Thanks for these responses.

Yeah, the panels tend to be grim or look budget hotel bathroom imho.

Yes I have looked in store - wasn't much I thought was anything other than dull or not right.

I'm not bothered about defining my personality, I'd just like something that isn't really boring!

We're not tiling the floor, it's for half walls and the shower. I'll have a look Mandarin Stone, etc. I'd rather have ceramic or porcelain than anything that needs sealing.

If you didn't see anything in store try another store. I find independent tile stores are more interesting than the big chains.

These are some of the Mandarin Stone ones I liked. We have an older house also

I had a look at Mandarin Stone and also Fired Earth.

Thanks for those links @A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 - I like the Oska tiles and thought the lichen colour was lovely. I thinking about something with some texture/colour variation, but keeping it quite light. I also love some tiny hexagonal marble tiles in pales blue/greens, but probably not practical as 1. they'd need sealing and 2. the tiler will likely hate me!

Sealing marble is easy so don’t worry about it if you like it otherwise. Your tiler may hate you though. We had to pay extra for marble floor tiles to be installed but it’s so so worth it. Find the look you want and then a tile to suit. Do you want it bright and fresh, calming and spa like, dark and moody? Save images on Pinterest then find the tiles.

I went for simple white flat rectangular and dressed it up other ways for a luxury hotel feel. Another bathroom will be spa like and a third will be dark, Moroccan inspired. I’ve also had art deco style which isn’t far off the period for your house. If you plan to move then you’d have to be less adventurous but design it to bring you joy each day.

The current bathroom has some art deco styling we inherited when we bought the house. It also has the world's most stupid wooden panelling around a bath with shower over it! You can imagine how that has fared over the years. DP has said no to marble though I might get away with a bit of marble mosaic. The house is arts and crafts.

We have Fired Earth Forecast metro tiles in our bathrooms. Absolutely love them and the colour range. Pricey but sometimes they have a deal on if you get lucky.

Just had a look at these online - there's matching dado tile. Thank you.

We have them in the Rockall (greenish) and Forth (blue). At the time I thought the blue was a gamble but it actually looks stunning with a period bath.

Your house sounds fab by the way!

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 24/05/2024 11:52

@FrogTheWarrior we were literally jumping up and down when we viewed (out of sight of the sellers!). It stuck on the market for two years as it had such eclectic decor, loads of clutter and a far too small kitchen. I love it - makes me smile everyday. This is the last big job for a while, I hope.

Yesterday I ordered Paintbox tiles from Mandarin Stone, thank you for the recommendation. I am so looking forward to having a new bathroom and beautiful tiles!

As its a freestanding bath what about wall panelling half way instead?. I dont mean shower wall panels see my pics attached. I wanted square type panelling but this was much cheaper and i can re paint when im sick of the colour...Shower cubicle is just white metro tiles with grey grout.
Two yrs one im now thinking wallpaper above the bath wall as its rarely used. We just have a shower!

We're removing the existing, quite ornate panelling. I hate it. It gets damp in the bathroom atmosphere then dust sticks to it. It's not original. Yours looks lovely @Moversnotshakers. We'll be able to decorate between the top of the tiles and the ceiling.
