Small double bed for teen

Will I regret getting a small double bed instead of a standard double for a teenager (16 years old)? A standard double would just about fit but would leave limited space for bedside table.

Small double would allow for a reasonable size bedside table and I guess help make room feel less dominated by the bed.

Can't decide which is the best option! Thanks

We bought them for ours and still use one as a spare bed. Absolutely fine.

I’ve just bought one for my teen DD, they are the same length as doubles and only a few inches smaller in width but like you that made the difference ina bed side table fitting for us.
I guess until two people will be sleeping in it in the regularly in the future it’s plenty big enough. I’m a large adult and could sleep very comfortably in it.

Hmm...I really think it would be a mistake. A small double is a nightmare for 2 people to sleep in, so using it for guests or your son and his partner in years to come will just be uncomfortable. I have a teeny bedroom with a small bedside table, a double bed and a fabulous oak picture shelf above the bed which is so good to create extra space for books, lamp, phone charging area etc. You can be creative. You can't improvise comfort if the bed's too small. Also, get an ottoman bed for storage, either a side lift or end lift, depending on what works in the room.

I bought a small double for mine and it's fine. It means he can fit his bedside table in and that makes a big difference. As PP have said, it's only really a squeeze if two people sleep in it regularly.

Will likely only get small double for my youngest when he's a teen as a double will take up too much space I think, I had one in uni and it was fine.

And DH and I shared it as teens/young adults and it was fine, we have a super king these days but we didn't know better back then!

It's fine for now but will very quickly be too small in the coming years when it's needed for 2 people.

DD has a small double and loves it, next time I need a new bed I'll be buying myself one too. Buying sheets is a bit of a pain as they don't tend to sell them in local shops here so it's a case of ordering online or just using a double but it tends to ruffle, unless of course you go with a proper flat sheet in that case it probably wouldn't matter.

DD moved into a small double (4ft) when she was about 15. 3 yrs later when her boyfriend came to stay for lockdown they were fine in it.
He kind of never left but they now have a full double and the small double is the spare room bed.

I second small double. Working well for my teen and gives him plenty of space for desk etc

ramonaquimby · 10/05/2024 21:17

Not a mistake. We bought out teens small doubles when they were much younger and all have been used for friends staying over. Fine for occasional guests

ramonaquimby · 10/05/2024 21:17

As in couples sharing

Tumbleweed101 · 12/05/2024 18:25

I've got a small double, a normal double would have left me with no other space and I'm single so don't need a bigger bed.
