Can you take a lampshade off a lamp and put it on another?

Sorry if this is a really dumb question!

I've seen a lampshade that I really like, but not a fan of the base it's on. Could I buy a base that I like and just put the lampshade on it? I'm hoping that's how they work...

Yes. Although you might need a little metal ring to change the size. Cheap to buy.

Absolutely you can, but be aware, there are a few different types of shades which aren't always compatible with all bases.

Your most popular shade has whats called a gimbal ring which fits directly onto the lamp holder (there are different sized rings for screw in and bayonet cap lampholders, but they are usually supplied with plastic reducers so they should fit either).

Then there are "harp and finial" shades, popular in America, but also occasionally used in the UK. These have a bespoke fitted frame to hold the shade in place, and can only be used on other "harp and finial" bases.

Finally, larger lamp shades often have to be used with a shade carrier, so make sure you have a shade carrier to fit your lamp base if your lamp shade has a wide fixing ring.
