Really comfortable small armchair

I'm looking for two armchairs to go into the room that I have decided to call, grandly, 'the library' (because it is going to have some bookshelves and I am a bit up myself).

Can anyone recommend a model of armchair that they have bought/sat in for a reasonable period of time that is lovely and comfortable?

I've sat in one of these today and found it pretty comfy but have heard some negatives about The Cotswold Company so not sure about it. www.cotswoldco.com/sofas-and-armchairs/harriet/armchair/matt-velvet/soft-rose/?kw=Harriet%20-%20Armchair%20-%20Soft%20Rose%20-%20Matt%20Velvet&queryid=6dfa7492181def22517ef94e6688ce10

Also DP thinks the turned legs are old fashioned (but frankly he has terrible taste so unless they actually make him cry I'm going to ignore small complaints).

We're looking for smallish, tidyish looking chairs but not minimalist and not bedroom accent chairs. They're for sitting in to read so need to be comfy for a long sit.

Any recommendations or warnings very gratefully received.

I've been oolong for a smalls
armchair forever 😄. So many are massive!

I quite like that one, but it's beyond my budget I think.

^looking for a small

PostHummus · 21/04/2024 17:52

It's nearly a meter deep though actually, it's not that small.

ElizabethVonArnim · 21/04/2024 17:55

Well, I guess we're not looking for very small, then, but not the big 80s overstuffed ones. Maybe that's what I mean.

I basically mean not-at-all-like-this

It is quite dear. I've been so shocked by the cost of everything! But it is the first room I've got control of the decorating in in my partner's house and I want it to be lovely.

The Next Sherlock chairs are comfy and come in a great range of colours!

There was an armchair in my local Next Store which looked fabulous

I appreciate that's not very helpful as I didn't sit on it, but it looked lovely

And I don't think you're up yourself at all

PostHummus · 21/04/2024 18:05

Yes, I know exactly what you mean re huge armchairs 😄.

I'm off to look at the Next Sherlock ones...

AllTheMiniEggs · 21/04/2024 18:08

If it's any help, I have an ikea Erktop (spelling?) armchair.

It is not even the tiniest bit comfortable 😬

UnOeufIsEnough · 21/04/2024 18:11

We have two Sherlocks and they're nice for reading in. A good armrest size for supporting your elbow!

ElizabethVonArnim · 21/04/2024 20:03

That's helpful - we've got a big Next near us and it hadn't occurred to me to look there. I will go and look tomorrow. They're not all checked though, are they?

All chairs are going to feel different to everyone.

we had an Erktop which the teen loved & couldn't be moved from!!

I like to lie down to read.

Boopear · 21/04/2024 20:14

I have an Ikea STRANDMON (high backed armchair) and it is v comfortable indeed. Also looks great (I have it in yellow..)

Agree that every chair feels different to everyone, but I've read some really useful reviews on here about sofas that have been horrendously uncomfortable or badly made so just watching out for those - need to whittle down the choices, but also to point out places to look that I might not have thought of.

No, we have a solid sage green one and a pale grey one with a white check but not a bold one.

We have Parker Knoll Froxfield chairs - 2 are about 30 years old & 2 over 50 years old (that we had re-upholstered when we bought the "new" ones). Just looked at the prices now & they're v v expensive, but if you got some 2nd hand ones maybe you could get them re-upholstered?

Mykittensmittens · 21/04/2024 21:27

I’m currently parked in an ikea strandmon (with footstool) and it’s MY chair and others get booted out of it if they dare to invade. It’s comfy for me - I like to sit with my legs up on the stool rather than curl. But it also gives good back support with or without additional ‘pretty’ cushions. Plus the back is high enough to lean your head on. I have an angled lamp over it for reading. And a little side table for tea (or wine. Mostly wine.)

Ikea Poang
Comfortable and very supportive for me

morden123 · 23/04/2024 20:32

I also recommend Parker Knoll Froxfield, they're so comfortable. My parents had these in their sheltered housing 'communal lounge' but you can buy them with with mordern materials.

PostHummus · 23/04/2024 22:48

@morden123, they're actually quite nice, and although they're expensive, at least they'd last and could be re-upholstered in the future. I'm quite tempted.

@PostHummus Yes, as I said we had some of ours re-upholstered - they are made to last as the newest are about 30 years old and still going strong

PostHummus · 23/04/2024 22:53

Thanks, I definitely like the idea of an armchair for life!

TheFairyCaravan · 23/04/2024 23:05

We’ve also got ikea strandmon armchairs. They’re so unbelievably comfortable. I’m so tempted to buy a couple more to keep in the loft, every time we go to IKEA just incase they stop selling them.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 23/04/2024 23:07

I had a small bedroom chair reupholstered recently. I don’t read in it, but it has excellent qualities for sitting comfortably for 20 mins meditation.
Im a big fan of up cycling stuff rather than buying new … if you can.
