ideas for "timeless" mugs

We use our mugs a lot. We work from home, and drink several cups of coffee and tea between us. The problem is we buy sets of mugs and over the years one or two break, so then we get more so we can have a complete set, meaning we have 3 or so from the previous set that thus far we've just carried on using. But we need to rationalise the amount of room our mugs are taking so I'd like to clear the slate and start afresh.

What I'd really like is to find a mug that fits my criteria and that also is part of a collection that means we can get a replacement if one breaks (as opposed to buying a whole new set.)

I really like a non-frilly, classic 'tin can' shape mug with full, slightly upturned handle - the actual penguin book mugs are pretty perfect shape wise for me: https://shop.penguin.co.uk/collections/mugs (the knock offs less so, but they aren't bad)

  • They must be microwavable
  • Preferable they come in different colours or patterns so we can remember whose coffee is whose
  • Points if they are sturdy and hold heat - my favourites have been bone china but I'm open.

But the real kicker I'm coming up against is finding ones that are part of an ongoing line, so that I can buy replacements. Here's what I've found, and why they aren't quite right for me...

What else? Something must fit the bill and I'm just overlooking it. Doesn't need to be fancy (the ones above are all pricier than I what I've spent previously, but if I only need to replace one every year rather than the lot, it will be worth it.

Any ideas?

A fellow mug lover!

I’m sorry that I won’t be able to offer any ideas, but I did want to say that I feel your need to get the mugs right. When I come across a mug I like the shape, weight and design of I tend to buy a couple so that I have a replacement.

My present favourite is a green polka dot mug that’s tapers slightly downwards and has a rounded lip. It was about £1 from a tat shop.

I love my Denby! I'm also a collector of Starbucks 'You are here' and 'Relief' mugs, some of which are part of my collection and some of which we use.

We’ve got a cupboard full of Le Creusets. Nothing fiddly about them, they’re sturdy, comfy to hold, last incredibly well. We have 4 or 5 different colours and DH and I have colours we each use so no confusion. Couldn’t recommend them more.

Different shapes but the habitat matte mugs https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/habitat-matte-green-mug are fairly solid, they bring out different colours but they tend to all co-ordinate. They are quite robust, fairly big and microwave safe.

Denby is usually the brand I see people talk about where they want the ongoing collection option for replacements. But I just looked at John Lewis and Denby mugs are £18 each.

I adore the Keith Bremerton Jones mugs.
DH got me the 'Dont be a Dick' from Hebtroco for valentines but I managed to break it. The butter shot out of the fridge in a weird accident and knocked it off the side

Then I discovered his own website https://www.keithbrymerjones.com/product-category/mugs-cups/?wpffilterr_designer=keith-brymer-jones

DH got me a new one for my birthday. Grin

Maybe not the right shape but the Moorland Pottery mugs are our favourites.

They feel 'right' and have lots of different designs so you can keep adding to the collection.

Look at the John Lewis “Anyday” range- lots of nice options.

TotalDramarama24 · 20/04/2024 22:49

I've got the Le Creuset 350ml rainbow mugs and they have been the best mugs I have ever bought. The runners up are some Radley hello mugs or Denby intro.

My absolute favourite mug is from Lush Designs https://www.lushlampshades.co.uk/collections/china

It's a great shape and size and is good and sturdy. Bit pricey but they're a small local business and their designs are beautiful. Not sure if they're microwaveable though!

You can buy them with Tesco Clubcard points.

I have a le creuset one from t k maxx at work. Why not buy a dozen? Our home mugs are a mix of Marks and Spencer and Denny linen.

OliveHenry · 20/04/2024 23:37

These are my favourite mugs and I recommend them every time someone asks about mugs on here! I've had one nearly 14 years, used nearly every day, and it looks as good as new.

Take a look at People Need Plates.

Another vote for le creuset. I treated myself to a whole rainbow of them a few years back and they still look amazing. Extremely robust and hold the heat well. I love them.

Mclaggan Smith mugs make the style of mug you’re looking for. I was pleased to be able to literally replace a couple many years after they were purchased, but they don’t have them now, so the ranges do fade in and out. But they use a very limited number of sizes, so I think would always provide something pretty in the same size as your collection.

Came on to say Le Cruset. I don’t have them (I like Cath Kidston ones for shape), but my sister has them and there’re good.
