ideas for "timeless" mugs

We use our mugs a lot. We work from home, and drink several cups of coffee and tea between us. The problem is we buy sets of mugs and over the years one or two break, so then we get more so we can have a complete set, meaning we have 3 or so from the previous set that thus far we've just carried on using. But we need to rationalise the amount of room our mugs are taking so I'd like to clear the slate and start afresh.

What I'd really like is to find a mug that fits my criteria and that also is part of a collection that means we can get a replacement if one breaks (as opposed to buying a whole new set.)

I really like a non-frilly, classic 'tin can' shape mug with full, slightly upturned handle - the actual penguin book mugs are pretty perfect shape wise for me: https://shop.penguin.co.uk/collections/mugs (the knock offs less so, but they aren't bad)

  • They must be microwavable
  • Preferable they come in different colours or patterns so we can remember whose coffee is whose
  • Points if they are sturdy and hold heat - my favourites have been bone china but I'm open.

But the real kicker I'm coming up against is finding ones that are part of an ongoing line, so that I can buy replacements. Here's what I've found, and why they aren't quite right for me...

What else? Something must fit the bill and I'm just overlooking it. Doesn't need to be fancy (the ones above are all pricier than I what I've spent previously, but if I only need to replace one every year rather than the lot, it will be worth it.

Any ideas?

@FollowTheFuckingInstructions I heat cocoa in the microwave and if you use stoneware it just heats up the sodding mug 😡. I hate the fact that it's so impractical! Surely you don't drink tea from a horrid thick chunky hunk of stoneware?! 😨

@UnOeufIsEnough I just don't get it. I have several giant stoneware mugs that I ungratefully received as gifts. They never get used and they take up sooo much space! I'm wondering when I can sneak them off to charity shop without anyone noticing...

Good grief, no. Tea in a stoneware mug?! faints

Cocoa - yes.

@FollowTheFuckingInstructions , Tea needs to be in a china mug, doesn't it.

Absolutely!

I think crockery and cutlery affect my pleasure of food and drink.

I had to explain to a bartender what a hi-ball glass was as he was going to put my G&T in something resembling a fishbowl.

My cornishware mugs are great... Microwave well and decent handle..
Emma Bridgewater prettier but do not microwave well...

Sounds like a regular gin glass.

Another Le Cruset lover here. You can buy them in sets, pairs or as individuals. As they are a timeless shape a mish mash of colours still looks like a ‘set’ but can be added to as needed. Currently 7 in our house, all different colours

Yes. tallish, fairly narrow straight-sided glass.

I love my Dunoon Orkneys. Lots of designs in different styles. Tea tastes next in bone china!

Keepsmiling2948 · 24/04/2024 21:56

Le Creuset all day long! I have the tea mugs and smaller coffee mugs in a cream/neutral. Always able to find replacements, they are a classic.

LoobyDop · 25/04/2024 19:09

Love how many rainbow Le Creuset lovers there are! I like to pick my morning mug to either match or offer a pleasing contrast to my outfit. Husband has an uncanny ability to choose the mug I wanted seconds before I reach for it. I have been known to hide it so he can’t.

These guys have some gorgeous designs, the mugs shown are 11oz ceramic but 9oz bone china can be special ordered, message them on FB for details :)

Emma Bridgwater mugs are awful - such bad quality

have a bone china one from Waitrose which is my favourite - my mum is always trying to take it home as she loves it as well.

KirstenBlest · 16/05/2024 19:47

Has the quality of the EB ones gone downhill?

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 16/05/2024 19:55

Reading with some interest although have no suggestions. I am ridiculously fussy with mugs and at least half of the ones we own I would never use under any circumstances (don't like shape, don't like feel, too big, too small, is specifically for one of the children etc). I just use plain white builders type ones and am very happy.

As a side note my favourite mug of all time is one with a Monet print on at my in laws. I've never found it's rival. My mother in law, bless her, absolutely always makes me tea in that mug when we visit as she's notices it's my favorite one, which is unbelievably lovely of her.

Squee!

Thank you thank you thank you for bringing this site to my attention! I have five (I only liked five of the colours they stocked) of these mugs already, bought several years ago from Tebay services on the M6. I have been looking for new colours unsuccessfully ever since.

@iontheprize, these are great mugs - like you I like to "I like to put my hand around the mug and 2-3 fingers through the handle" and these mugs are brilliant for that. They've been through the dishwasher countless times and look absolutely perfect - no fading, gilt logo still fresh.

<Runs off to choose new colours>

Agree Cornishware

Steppingintome · 17/05/2024 22:16

Emma bridgewater mugs are lovely but in the microwave they go scolding hot and burn your flesh whilst the drink remains tepid inside. I’ve also lost a couple of handles :(

im tempted by the le creuset mugs now! I love the fact I can choose a colour based on my mood lol

My Highland Stoneware mugs finally arrived, and they're lovely 😍

Worth the wait, thanks for the recommendation.

(The pen-holding mug in the background is one I coveted and eventually splurged on when I was at university, so probably my oldest mug)

I was recently given this and it's now my favourite. It looks more beautiful than the photo. Not a tin can shape (perhaps useful for others but not OP) but I love the shape and size
