ideas for "timeless" mugs

We use our mugs a lot. We work from home, and drink several cups of coffee and tea between us. The problem is we buy sets of mugs and over the years one or two break, so then we get more so we can have a complete set, meaning we have 3 or so from the previous set that thus far we've just carried on using. But we need to rationalise the amount of room our mugs are taking so I'd like to clear the slate and start afresh.

What I'd really like is to find a mug that fits my criteria and that also is part of a collection that means we can get a replacement if one breaks (as opposed to buying a whole new set.)

I really like a non-frilly, classic 'tin can' shape mug with full, slightly upturned handle - the actual penguin book mugs are pretty perfect shape wise for me: https://shop.penguin.co.uk/collections/mugs (the knock offs less so, but they aren't bad)

  • They must be microwavable
  • Preferable they come in different colours or patterns so we can remember whose coffee is whose
  • Points if they are sturdy and hold heat - my favourites have been bone china but I'm open.

But the real kicker I'm coming up against is finding ones that are part of an ongoing line, so that I can buy replacements. Here's what I've found, and why they aren't quite right for me...

What else? Something must fit the bill and I'm just overlooking it. Doesn't need to be fancy (the ones above are all pricier than I what I've spent previously, but if I only need to replace one every year rather than the lot, it will be worth it.

Any ideas?

We have Herdy peep mugs, which are bone china.

Le Crueset keep the heat in well, but are very thick which puts me off.
Emma Bridgewater don't like the dishwasher... brings the glaze off. I've got about 20 of the feckers and go mad when people use them as I have to hand wash them all.

I've just invested into a load of these, not cheap but really keep drinks warm and come in a lovely range of colours. I've also got the oversized cup/saucers to match. https://churchillhome.co.uk/collections/mugs

I have several designs of Cornishware and love them all. You can buy in a rainbow of colours now too.

Portmeirion BG Harmony? They're like tankards.

Dreamycinemascape · 22/04/2024 21:48

These ones from John Lewis are lovely and fit your tin can shape with upturned handles:

I had no idea I had such a strong opinion on mugs til this thread. I love a good sturdy large stoneware mug. Highland Stoneware is my gold standard: www.highlandstoneware.com/product/1-pint-mug-seascape/

Least favourite would be a bone china, gold rimmed thin thing. You've got to be able to wrap a whole hand round your cup of tea.

Icehockeyflowers · 22/04/2024 22:01

I'm really enjoying looking at all the colourful mugs on this thread. We have white Denby crockery and I don't like them. It reminds me of a work canteen and there is nothing pretty or characterful about it at all.
They last a long time though. I bought a different colour set from Ikea just to add colour to the tableware and all but two Ikea bowls remain. Everything else broke or cracked.

@Gymnopedie I'm intrigued - but you missed out the link?

Sorry, it was a working link when I posted, I don't know where it's gone.

Once more with feeling....

edit. It didn't take the link again. The full link:

You have just cost me a lot of money, damn it. I clicked the link and fell in love with the snowscape mug. And as DH likes a huge mug and has just had a big birthday, I picked out one for him too.

UnOeufIsEnough · 22/04/2024 23:20

I have a snowscape one and it's stunning in the flesh. You won't regret it!

I am sorry though as you won't be able to stop at one Grin

Now you two are setting me off ... This could be expensive!

MidnightMeltdown · 22/04/2024 23:25

I love how much thought you've put into your mugs! Not to mention the fact that you find non matching mugs unacceptable... 😂

Seriously though, I would avoid stoneware, it's thick and overly heavy and terrible for mugs and crockery imo. Look for bone China - it won't chip easily.

UnOeufIsEnough · 22/04/2024 23:27

Go on...add it to your basket Wink

The seconds stuff is still fantastic quality and a wee bit cheaper: www.highlandstoneware.com/product-category/outlet/seconds-mugs/

Actually couldn't disagree more! My Highland Stoneware and I will never be parted. Grin

You can't drink cocoa from china, are you insane?!

What this for me? Damnit- I'm going to have to, aren't I!

BasiliskStare · 23/04/2024 00:01

@iontheprize - I used to be a fan of matching mugs - whether through age or just preference we now have mismatching mugs. I like a bone china thin lipped , but we also have a big one ( I think it came from New York ) which is great for soup. I have a couple with pretty designs of bees etc and some others which were frankly gifts or giveaways. Also a couple I bought from the Chelsea flower show which aren't big but reasonably sturdy & have a little thing on the front which is our breed of dogs. DS has a mug a friend of his bought from the Pantone range in Battleship grey - that is his mug .

I admire your discipline for matching mugs - I really do but I have (personally left it behind and partly because I think not all mugs are good for the same function. So for me , tea - bone china thin lip - coffee a bit sturdier , soup ( which others many think doesn't belong in a mug certainly doesn't belong in in a bone china mug.

My mother has mismatching mugs but very particular about the one she will have her morning coffee from

😂☕

MidnightMeltdown · 23/04/2024 00:16

@FollowTheFuckingInstructions I heat cocoa in the microwave and if you use stoneware it just heats up the sodding mug 😡. I hate the fact that it's so impractical! Surely you don't drink tea from a horrid thick chunky hunk of stoneware?! 😨

@UnOeufIsEnough I just don't get it. I have several giant stoneware mugs that I ungratefully received as gifts. They never get used and they take up sooo much space! I'm wondering when I can sneak them off to charity shop without anyone noticing...

I agree, different mugs for different drinks. But for me it's more about size. Tea goes in a standard size mug and coffee goes in a small mug.
Always thin China though!

I wouldn't dream of putting soup in a mug

NotMeNoNo · 23/04/2024 07:45

Has anyone mentioned Dunoon mugs yet, loads of shapes and designs available and they do have a collection of shapes that go on from year to year.

OP I think deep down if you like the Pantone mugs go for it!

CoffeeWithCheese · 23/04/2024 08:53

Coffee goes in a bucket sized mug in this house!

I love the Pantone mugs but... not paying more than a couple of quid per mug in this house with my family!

This made me laugh. If there's any Highland Stoneware in your stash, I'd gladly take it off your hand 🤣

I'll swap you for the bone china tartan one languishing in the attic Grin

I have this one on my desk as a pen holder...hard to see but it's a bit dimply. I find myself pointing at is when I can't be bothered responding to mainsplainers.

I love the emma bridgewater mugs. I love the keith brymer jones too, but have chipped a couple.
