Sofa and rug too big?

Home interior newbie and I’m feeling overwhelmed.

Got a sofa I’ve been coveting for a very good price on eBay, but now I cannot help but feel like it’s far too big for the room. Or have YouTube design videos have made me paranoid?

To top it off, my long awaited fancy rug arrived today and I think it’s made the problem worse.

It all looks really beige still as I need curtains, artwork and a coffee table. What have I done wrong?

Honest opinions very welcome!

(P.s. know the TV is also too high but it’s really the only place it fits.)

ugh!

Sorry OP I kinda think it is too big to look perfect BUT it does all look, genuinely, very comfortable and so is appealing to me from that pov. For that reason, I personally would live happily with it, in deep comfort Grin

BrendaSmall · 09/04/2024 16:33

Unfortunately the rug looks out of place as it’s far too big

Tatas · 09/04/2024 16:36

I think the rug is the perfect size, but perhaps it's the colour / texture is so different to everything else in the room that's why it looks so big and slightly out of place! The sofa is perhaps too large on the corner section, but looks so comfy I could ignore it 😂

DotWomanNeighbour · 09/04/2024 16:44

Well I like it x

Mindymomo · 09/04/2024 16:48

I think it’s fine, I like big rugs as I don’t normally like wood floors, but yours looks really nice. I think some grey curtains with maybe orange pattern would definitely warm up the room.

Cheeesus · 09/04/2024 16:50

Picture on the wall behind the sofa and you’ll be good, I reckon.

LilianaVikavanovich · 09/04/2024 16:53

I like it , I dislike small rugs but I love the size of the one you have
It just needs brightening up ( like you said ) with cushions , art etc . A couple of nice big house plants and you’ll be fine

Chewbecca · 09/04/2024 16:54

I think slimmer (less deep) units in the alcove might help? The gap between the leg bit and that unit is too small.
Have you tried putting the leg end on the other end too?
Plus mirror, picture, window covering and potted plants will all help it look more 'finished'.

StasisMom · 09/04/2024 16:55

I like! But agree about something on the wall behind the sofa. I could happily come and collapse on it now.

MaverickBoon · 09/04/2024 16:58

That sofa looks sooo inviting. I think sizing is fine - as a pp said, you just need some really lovely (big) artwork above the sofa.

MaverickBoon · 09/04/2024 17:00

And if it were textural that might be good - maybe oils or gouache (sp?!) without glass in the frame. We have a beautiful painting above our fireplace that's framed with no glass and the textural aspect of it makes a real difference.

I would move the rug slightly towards the fireplace and up a 5 towards the door, don't tuck it away. Pull it more away from the window it will make a huge difference.

Devonisheaven · 09/04/2024 17:02

I think the rug looks wrong because of the skinny bit of wood flooring left, pull the rug out a bit more so more of the floor is covered and it will look more balanced, at the minute everything looks shoved up against the wall and it’s making the room look out of kilter.

Dartmoorcheffy · 09/04/2024 17:04

I like it. You just need some bright coloured cushions.

Moveoverdarlin · 09/04/2024 17:48

The TV looks ridiculous, it looks like it’s falling off. Put it on a unit to the left of the fireplace. Get a mirror above the fireplace. But it needs to be nice and big, bigger than the TV.

I think the rug is fine but too much of it is under the sofa, pull it out until it’s almost touching the hearth of the fireplace.

Personally I think the sofa is probably too big. It dominates the room. I would have gone for a smaller sofa along the wall and then a love seat / snuggler / big armchair in the bay window. But assume you’re stuck with it now? It doesn’t look that bad and does look comfy.

Rather than one big picture on the wall behind the sofa, I would get two big matching pictures side by side, with nice heavy frames.

Tisfortired · 09/04/2024 17:50

I like it. I think it looks good - but I am in the hard floor giant rug club also.

Some further furnishings would finish it off nicely but I think it looks fine.

featheryfancy · 09/04/2024 18:05

Pull the rug toward the fire place so it’s more evenly spaced

schloss · 09/04/2024 18:14

If it was me, I would have the L shape of the sofa at the other end (not sure if it can be moved). This would allow you to have some lovely curtains at the bay window, I see there is a curtain rail up already.

Move the rug further towards the fireplace.

Remove the TV from the wall and replace with a large mirror or painting.

Dependant on what way round the sofa is put the TV on one side of the fireplace.

Paintings on the wall behind the sofa.

I love it.
Whack a nice big plant on by the window, add a standard lamp, a bit of artwork. Perfect.

Sunnnybunny72 · 09/04/2024 18:33

I wouldn't have put a corner sofa there. It's leaving kind of a useless space in front of the window.
Agree it needs curtains. And less sofa.

ABirdsEyeView · 09/04/2024 18:51

This is a bit like my living room - I have a big corner sofa a huge rug - I really like it . And I think the important thing is to be comfortable - you'll spend a lot of time sitting on that sofa, watching tv.
Agree with pp about repositioning the rig slightly - one your choices, don't hide them. You'll be surprised how much lamps and plants and pictures etc make a difference.

ABirdsEyeView · 09/04/2024 18:52

I would move the telly though - it doesn't look right balancing on the mantle piece.

Thank you! I will try repositioning the rug as quite a few people have suggested that 👍

I was originally planning for a left hand chaise version of the sofa to create a cosy divided room with the focus towards the bay window as it’s a big open plan space, but budget and time was against me so we opted for this one instead as it was a bargain. It’s not modular so I can’t switch the chaise end around unfort.

The TV has been a massive palava! We had an even bigger one in our modern flat but had to ditch it as we couldn’t make it work at all. DH has been puzzling the best solution since we moved in to no avail. We both do quite a lot of gaming, so chose to prioritise that over aesthetics, it’s a trade off for sure.

Are you going to be standing in your room looking around or sitting down comfortably?

BathroomReDesign · 09/04/2024 18:57

I think it’s perfect sizes. Move the rug s suggested and get a few more things in and perfect, the rug isn’t to my style but the size is great and looks much better big like this and tucker under the sofa than a tiny little rug not touching the sofa.
