Sofa and rug too big?

Home interior newbie and I’m feeling overwhelmed.

Got a sofa I’ve been coveting for a very good price on eBay, but now I cannot help but feel like it’s far too big for the room. Or have YouTube design videos have made me paranoid?

To top it off, my long awaited fancy rug arrived today and I think it’s made the problem worse.

It all looks really beige still as I need curtains, artwork and a coffee table. What have I done wrong?

Honest opinions very welcome!

(P.s. know the TV is also too high but it’s really the only place it fits.)

ugh!

The TV is the biggest issue. Put it either side of the fireplace.

Always go slightly too big over slightly too small.

CultOfTheAirFryer · 09/04/2024 19:04

Like a lot of people, I’m not sure why you’re worried about the size of the rug when your giant tv is hanging off your fireplace. It needs to go in the alcove - on a pull out arm if needed.

The size of the rug is fine, but is a totally different colour and texture to the sofa. Some cushions and throws that go with the rug would help unite the two. Don’t just buy cushions that match the rug, that won’t work - you need to quietly reference the colour and texture of the rug via other soft furnishings.

Cutting off the bay window is what I think makes it look unbalanced. Maybe a console table in the bay window could help? Also some big artwork and wall hung lamps behind the sofa will help ground it in the room.

The proportions dont look right to me

Its a lovely room but it looks all squashed up against one side, theres no equalibrium to it.

Can you get a smaller TV to put in the left hand alcove
Can you get a small love seat in the bay window and have a smaller sofa

The rug doesnt look right so far under the sofa

However, if you are happy with it and its comfortable dont worry about it.

By the way where do you put a cuppa and biscuits/wine and snacks? You've got no side tables at either end of the sofa.

I have to have everything in arms length

I like! But agree about something on the wall behind the sofa. I could happily come and collapse on it now.

It is an insanely comfortable sofa!!

It looks comfy but might have been better as a two seater small table in the corner then separate armchair in the bay. Rug is a bit too large.

I think slimmer (less deep) units in the alcove might help? The gap between the leg bit and that unit is too small.
Have you tried putting the leg end on the other end too?
Plus mirror, picture, window covering and potted plants will all help it look more 'finished'.

Very good point - that unit in the alcove is a temporary leftover from my DH’s ‘batchelor pad’ modern flat 🤦🏼‍♀️

I will use this as ammo to convince him it needs to go! 🙇‍♀️

As you say the sofa isn't modular, I would move it away from the bay window (it looks like you have a few inches available at the other end) which will allow you to have full length curtains which will not be impacted by the sofa.

Back to the TV, I know an extra cost but I would have built in cupboards made either side of the fireplace, one of which will be specifically made for the TV. The TV could be fitted on an arm to come further out of the cupboards for when you are gaming, but for normal watching of TV can be in a less prominant position. I would have the TV in the alcove furthest away from the window.

smooththecat · 09/04/2024 19:29

I would put the rug fully under the sofa. I think it looks good.

CarrotyO · 09/04/2024 19:33

The TV should be eye-level, you'll strain your neck and shoulders having it up there. Need to get an arm thingy that attaches to the alcove wall.

PenguinWaiting · 09/04/2024 20:14

I like it, looks really cosy. Love the rug!

Personally I think the chaise bit of the sofa is at the correct end, it would surely block too much of the path of travel sticking out into the room at the other end and you'd get fed up of walking round it? But then all my furniture is pretty much against the wall which I know is not the done thing!

Could you get a narrow console table for the tv on the side of the fireplace furthest from the window, where you are standing to take the first picture?

MouseMinge · 09/04/2024 20:57

I like the sofa and the rug. I think once you've got some accessories, cushions, art, lighting, etc and good curtains it will look great. That sofa looks so comfy, I want to just sink into it.

anythinginapinch · 09/04/2024 21:04

Sent go small on your other bits. You need a biiig picture behind the sofa, huge squishy cushions, a biiiig plant. ...

anythinginapinch · 09/04/2024 21:04

Don't go , rather than sent go!

Sweetheart7 · 09/04/2024 21:10

The sofa is lovely. The white rug doesn't match you would of been better with a darker colour similar to your sofa.

Librarybooker · 09/04/2024 23:16

I think it’s all a modern look that works if it’s what you want. I’d be ripping up the floor to see if you have a nice Victorian one underneath though

Jf20 · 10/04/2024 07:49

No it’s not too big, but it’s too far under the sofa, which makes it look odd, pull it forward another plank level. And use it to fill the space. The issue is the room is really very bare right now.

Sundaymotor · 10/04/2024 10:28

Update having slept on it (in general not on the actual rug 😆):

Rug is going back tomorrow, sofa is staying. I’ll get a darker, slightly smaller, less expensive, more hard-wearing rug to sit just in front of the sofa so I can safely drink red wine anxiety-free.

Plants, cushions, coffee table and artwork all need to follow for sure. I guess we are only three weeks in at the house so this stuff takes time. 😓

That’s a shame. As it works, it just needs pulling forward a bit and the rest of the room dressed. Nice colourful cushions, blinds, artwork on the wall.

overthestorms · 10/04/2024 11:05

I really like your room OP. It looks cosy and homely.

Devonisheaven · 10/04/2024 11:20

I think you are doing the right thing, the rug was too fluffy, a woven rug would look more contemporary and is far more practical, vacuuming those shaggy, fluffy rugs is a pain.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 10/04/2024 11:27

One of my pet peeves when it comes to décor is piddly little rugs adrift in the middle of the floor. Looks shit. A rug should always fit under the front legs of the sofa.

So the size of your rug is good but the fluffiness isn’t great.

CultOfTheAirFryer · 10/04/2024 11:31

Change the rug for something darker and lower pile, but keep it large. It really wasn’t too big.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 10/04/2024 12:04

It looks fine. You could consider having the sofa face the window.
