Rug position advice (pic includes dog for traffic!)

I got this rug which I adore but the placement is giving me trouble. DH doesn't like it as it's too big apparently but I'm ignoring him in true IDM style.
Should it butt up to fireplace. Or be equidistant between there and sofa ? Or be under sofa/ butted up to sofa with a gap by the fireplace? Or something else?

I’ve been looking for rugs, and came across a rug placement guide on Pinterest, with little diagrams of sitting room layouts and how to position the rug for best effect. Who knew there were so many rug related rules!!

from a few things I've read lately the 'in' positioning is under the front legs of the sofa.

personally 'in' doesn't bother me & id put it wherever I liked it best. Possibly in line with the windows or other things we can't quite see.

put it where it looks best to you and isn't a trip hazard!!

Def under the front legs of the sofa, otherwise it is like a rug island out at sea :)

Ours is tucked under the sofa, because otherwise there is a small corridor between sofa/rug and rug/fire and it looks too small.
By putting it under the sofa the rug/fire gap is better, and I get somewhere soft for my toes when sitting!

I need some rugs in my life (carpets have been trashed by my dog) and I love your big rug. But as a PP said, the design thing is to 'anchor' your rug with your furniture and not have rug islands with gaps between the furniture and edge of the rug. So, sofa over the edge of the rug, and any chairs/second sofa similarly placed along another edge of the rug, I'd guess.
