Hi - just had these built after a very (very) long wait. Would you paint them white (Strong White on dado) or to match walls (Dix Blue)?

Was planning on white (more classic) but now worried it will look very stripy..

Very new to this so any advice much appreciated.

Personally I would do them the blue but also the skirting and dado so as to colour drench the room in that shade. I'd just leave ceiling & coving in white

Zonder · 03/04/2024 23:55

White for me

MummyRuns · 03/04/2024 23:58

Thanks @AcheyBreaky Just had the rest of the room (included dado + skirting) painted.. so ideally would leave these…

was a bit nervous of colour drenching as started with white-ish walls so this felt - and feels - like a big step forward.

also worried colour drenching is so on trend that it could look dated (sooner than I want to repaint!)

Thanks @Zonder

the thing that bothers me is the dado rail looks a bit random. All the instagram /Pinterest photos never seem to have this problem!

I'd paint the shelves blue, and probably the dado as well.

Cabinets white and shelves white or leave all estapolled wood.
I would not paint the lower cabinets blue as I think that will date more than wood or white.
Leave walls blue. Leave dado rail white or paint that the same as blue walls. You will probably not notice the dado being white once things are displayed on the cabinets.

Depends what you are going to have on the shelves. If you are going to have lots of books the shelf colour won't really matter.

There's no right or wrong way. I think white woodwork is more traditional and has more contrast.

Is the dado original? It looks a bit odd. I probably would have had the height of the cupboards up to the dado rail. If you'd had a picture rail then you could line that up with the shelves.

waftabout · 04/04/2024 05:28

I'd paint them white. We have similar in a blue room and the white looks lovely and will go with the coving.

If it was a deeper colour I might be tempted to match it as you'd be looking for a darker look but not with such a light colour.

Plus, any time you want to decorate you also have to do the bloody shelves. We'll just need to give them a bit of a touch up at most.

waftabout · 04/04/2024 05:29

I do agree the dado looks a bit weird but you probably won't see it when there's stuff on the cupboards.

Seaside3 · 04/04/2024 08:10

White if ypu want them.tp stand put, blue of you want them to blend in.

Soontobe60 · 04/04/2024 08:15

I have similar cupboards and we ended up painting them the same colour of the walls.
I think with your paint choices, there’s a stark contrast with the woodwork and walls. I would paint the dado the same colour as the walls too. It’s quite 1980’s

PoochiesPinkEars · 04/04/2024 08:17

Personally I love it how it is!

TheFlis · 04/04/2024 08:19

I think the Dado looks a bit odd due to its height in relation to the cupboards. I would have made the cupboards the same height or slightly higher than the dado.

Revelatio · 04/04/2024 08:22

Can you remove the dado rail? It’s a very odd height. I would paint the cupboards blue, it will make the room look bigger as the cupboards will blend in.

TheOneWithUnagi · 04/04/2024 09:31

I would either paint the units and dado rail blue (preferred!) or if you want the dado rail white I would paint the units white.

Painting the units blue would make the white dado rail stand out more.

Love the blue!

Soccermumamir · 04/04/2024 10:30

White

RichardsGear · 04/04/2024 10:33

I would do them the same white as the dado. It will look like shelves, not stripes, especially when get stuff put on them.

MumPlanQuery · 04/04/2024 10:44

The dado rail is a chair rail and looks fine as-is.

I voted blue for the alcoves just to make them blend into the background a bit and it may make the room feel a bit larger.

White would pop more and make them the major feature in the room.

I think it will be lovely either way.
