What do I need to know?

We have 4 of them (see pic), fitted 10ish years ago. They had halogen bulbs in them that caused the blackening of the wall above them, as seen (cleaned up!).

We now have LED bulbs in them, which don't appear to have this problem.

We're going to replace the fittings, and need them to be dimmable, as they are now.

What's the latest technology? What do we need to consider?

Personally I think uplighters are outdated. We had them when we bought our house so took them out and plastered over the holes. We now have no wired lights in our living room and just have dimmable lamps which I much prefer.

But if you like them I would go to a lighting shop and see what more modern options they have.

So are yours free standing lamps?

Halogen lamps give off an awful lot of heat. This is why your lights have protective glass over them and would explain the scorch marks.

If you want to keep uplights, which do give a great effect for mood lighting when your big light is off, and you want the ambience without the glare, then just look out for lights with replaceable bulbs rather than built in LEDs. This way you can use different brightness and coloured bulbs. Other than that, the world is your oyster. Personally, i think uplights/wallwashers definitely have a place in the modern home.

A lighting designer told us to use Opal wall lights with dimmers and warm led lightbulbs, and it does give beautiful diffuse light
