Thanks, going round and round in circles

wood- needs oiling and been told to steer clear
wood laminate- worried it will look a bit cheap
white granite- will it stain, look too clinical
black granite- might look too severe
grey granite- a possibility

Reading with interest, as we're planning to replace our high gloss white kitchen with a wood, painted one with wooden worktops. Im hoping it'll be lifted with amazing tiles - looking at green. Not sure about flooring yet.

Don't go grey, OP, it's so dated already. I think if there's a grey vein through it you'd be okay, but not completely grey.

In our old kitchen we had white gloss cupboards and a bamboo worktop which I think we got from Wickes. It was beautiful, no issues with wet around the sink and didn't stain easily although I did find it needed quite frequent re-oiling as it seemed to dry out. We had spare left over so cut it in half lengthways, bought some wrought iron brackets and made two big wall shelves out of it.

Not this but very similar.

I have a white kitchen with wood countertops and we had them permanently sealed. I absolutely love it. We don't cut/chop food directly on our countertops anyway, so they don't have to be food safe. I love the look of white with the warmth of wood.

Me too.

DianaTaverner · 25/03/2024 09:39

I've got wood on the island and pale grey quartz around the sink. Quartz is brilliant except that if you drop a mug on it it shatters instantly: if you had wood or laminate there would be a fighting chance that it might bounce.

TheOneWithUnagi · 25/03/2024 10:32

We have a light cream kitchen, with black granite worktops.

The units were pine and we just had them painted and felt that we had to go for white or cream due to the dark worktops. I much prefer lighter colour worktops personally in quartz and we would have changed them if we had the budget.

In summary, black will look good with lighter colour units but in case you would want to paint or change your units later I think a lighter colour gives more options.

Granite is more susceptible to staining than quartz, I'd go for quartz.

When I was planning mine I went on instagram and followed the Howdens and white kitchen. Hashtags

My (small!) white kitchen has pale blue/ turquoise glass work tops and splash backs. Had it for over ten years and the work top still looks brand new. Heat resistant, pretty much scratch proof and easy to clean. The glass is sort of frosted, not shiny.

alpinia · 25/03/2024 14:14

Stainless steel. Its got a brushed/pearlised finish so doesn't look anything like a commercial kitchen.

Positives- looks great in a modern kitchen, heat resistant, very hard wearing, can't see scratches due to finish, sink is moulded as part of surface so easy to clean. Was not super expensive.

Negatives- does look even nicer after being polished with microfiber cloth which I can never be bothered doing. Very thin (0.5cm) which might not suit everything. Only really looks nice with a very modern kitchen.

I would choose it again.

DarkForces · 25/03/2024 14:17

Black quartz, I find the sparkles mean it's not harsh at all and really easy to keep looking as new.

Waitingforgeorge · 25/03/2024 18:39

Black granite is not great in a hard water area - you aren't meant to use acid cleaner on it.
We have white quartz - remove stains with cif/astonish/bar keepers friend. It's a bit old I don't think I'd go all white now - maybe a bit bored with it but it looks ok.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 25/03/2024 18:59

Eight years and counting - Via Lattea granite, Howden units - we live in a hard water area and I have only ever used Method granite cleaner, or a soapy cloth and a polish off with a tea towel. If a water mark appears, then simply use a green scrubber with a little Method cleaner and it is removed. Honestly a joy to keep clean.

We have black granite with ‘bits’ in it - not sure what they are but it’s ’interesting’!

wibblywobblytummytumtum · 25/03/2024 19:11

We have a white shaker style kitchen with white marble worktop; has blue-y grey veins in it. Oiled oak floor and dark walls. As long as you regularly seal the marble, it wears well. No issues so far here and we’re 6 years in.

ooooohnoooooo · 25/03/2024 19:12

Stainless steel. The sink is pressed into it so no joins. You can put hot things straight on it. It never stains, or burns and it's brilliant for making pastry.

And it looks cool too.

LamonicBibber1 · 25/03/2024 19:25

Solid light wood in mine, with white units and greige floor. It's fine as long as you wipe it daily with disinfectant. Oiled once a year, it's a piece of piss to maintain and can really take a beating. I put hot pans directly on it and it doesn't mark. I can sand and oil any little areas in between if it does get a mark. It's actually made of reclaimed scaffolding planks, the quality is insane considering how extremely cheap it was! It's about an inch and half thick and so smooth and tactile. It did take work though to cut, sand and fit, but saved a bloody fortune compared to a shop-bought solid wood worktop. I love it.

Mairzydotes · 25/03/2024 20:07

In our old house we had white units with a blue(!) Worktop and tiles. We replaced it with a wood effect laminate.

neonjumper · 25/03/2024 20:13

Walnut ... had them about 10 years , oiled them twice still in pristine condition.

Had walnut in the previous house and decided on walnut due to quality and the very little maintenance they need .

Littleoxforddictionary · 25/03/2024 20:18

Blue kind of quartz with mirror shards. I went to a local marble/quartz warehouse factory type place. Put on a hard hat and went to the factory floor to look at the end of line /off cuts section. Had some beautiful pieces for a lot less . Still v expensive but made it affordable. Would recommend if a possibility.

HowDoWeDoThisPlease · 25/03/2024 20:29

We have white units. Our worktops are granite. I picked this colour as we cook quite regularly with spices that might stain (turmeric, saffron etc), and so thought that the colour and pattern would hide if they got stained at all. There not been any actual issue with staining anyway, so might have been over cautious, but I really like the colour. We have an oak floor that it goes well with, and old beams on some walls and ceiling.

I’ve stayed in holiday homes with wood work tops and hate them, seem to show water spots really easily, and I’m always terrified of ruining them with a hot pot or water that I haven’t noticed I’ve splashed🤷‍♀️ I’d personally never have them.

We had a friend who got really beautiful black sparkly quartz as his worktop and he hated it, as he was constantly having to buff it up so it didn’t show streaks. We use method granite cleaner and it keeps ours lovely and clean.

These pics are the same granite, but not my kitchen.

My worktops are solid wood. I 'inherited' it with the white kitchen when moved in five years ago.

It's very forgiving, easy to maintain and offsets the cold white with some warmth.

I did start sanding it back a couple of years ago when I redecorated my kitchen and replaced the tiles, but I gave up because it looked no different! I oiled the sanded bits, but it's absolutely easy to look after. Just make sure you use a chopping board - don't cut straight on the worktop.

The limed oak custom made kitchen units in my last place? No. Just no. Don't go there!

Gottoloveatakeaway · 25/03/2024 20:45

I've got white glitter laminate. Makes me smile and totally heat/ scratch resistant.

PonzuYuzuHispiCabbage · 25/03/2024 20:59

I’ve just changed from the black granite worktops and splash-back that came with the house to a lightly marbled quartz and coloured tiles. It looked a bit clinical before to me. The tiles won’t be to everyone’s tastes but we are in Portugal and I wanted to inject a bit of pattern and colour. Our floor is white too and the house is very modern. I’m very happy with the new surface and it doesn’t show every fingermark as the black granite did.

I don’t think the marbling comes out in the photos but IRL it doesn’t look white. The pattern of the Quartz is Arrabescato. I’m away from home or I’d take better pictures of the work surface.

We've got walnut wood and it's great. I just oil it every few months (really simple, rub it on and rub off what hasn't soaked in an hour later).

Two years down the line with it and I'm still very happy.
