wood laminate- worried it will look a bit cheap
white granite- will it stain, look too clinical
black granite- might look too severe

We’ve got a white kitchen with black granite worktops and black granite flooring. At the m time I loved it but now I wish we’d gone for the Galaxy rather than the Absolute Nero. It’s a big space with plenty of light and can def take the dark contrast but I feel it looks dated now.
if I were you I’d go for the white marble effect with grey veins - it looks so fresh and clean and modern. I’d have the same on the floor - it comes in big tiles or pale grey. Plus much easier to clean than the black which shows up every speck of dust and dirt

My kitchen is not bright white, more off white ( called porcelain ) although it looks a bit darker in my photos. I went for dark grey mottled flooring ( Karndean) with grey quartz with a slight sparkle. I then added predominantly black/ dark grey appliances and accessories. By adding colour to the walls, I think I have got it right - for me at least!

Ignore the blind, I’m still deciding what to have in the window!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 24/03/2024 13:33

I have black granite that has a blue sparkle (not sure what it’s called) when the sun hits it, it has a blue hue.

CMOTDibbler · 24/03/2024 13:34

I have quartz worksurfaces - black with white veins and a very subtle sparkle. They look gorgeous and not at all clinical. The floor is Karndean baltic oak

I have a white kitchen with wood countertops and we had them permanently sealed. I absolutely love it. We don't cut/chop food directly on our countertops anyway, so they don't have to be food safe. I love the look of white with the warmth of wood.

Stade197 · 24/03/2024 13:38

I have white cupboards and went for a black worktops with a bit of sparkle in them 😊

Wood laminate that is great quality, wood grain effect to touch, looks fab. The company was easy to deal with and communication on delivery was excellent

I love mine. It's been on four years and still bring me joy every morning when the sun hits it. It's quartz with flecks of coloured glass through it.

Kitchen is white handleless. Teal coloured range. Dark wood floor.

Thanks that’s all so helpful. Does the white granite stain?

How do you permanently seal wood? Do you notice being extra vigilant re burning?

Love that wood laminate too but worried we’ll put something hot on it. Howdens wood laminate looked nice on the sample. Good to see a laminate in a kitchen.

There are several different products that can seal wood, but what I don't understand is why you're so concerned with putting hot things on countertops. You shouldn't do that on any countertop surface. Quartz and granite can crack from heat, and nearly any other surface, aside from possibly stainless steel can be damaged by heat, as well. I don't ever put hot pans directly on my countertops. I use a trivet or a wooden cutting board or just leave the pan on the hob.

I did what sems to be a very unpopular choice - formica. I was motivated by the kithcens of my childhood and cost and ease of care. Curry sauce, tea, coffee, beetroot whatever it is, it doesn't stain. Mine's the white with grey veined marble effect. My kitchen gets the morning sun so it is very bright, but from the afternoon it is on te dark side of the house, so it still looks bright and cheery in this light colour.

StressyMessyJess · 24/03/2024 14:59

Mine is Howdens laminate. Isn't affected by heat and very resistant to marks

If you look on the right of my picture, you will see a cork mat. I have a couple of those next to our cooker at all times so pans and roasting dishes etc go on those or the cooker top

Kleavers · 24/03/2024 18:41

I've got a white howden shaker kitchen and a white quartz worktop with some veining. It's easy to clean, always looks good.

VanillaImpulse · 24/03/2024 21:42

I've got white quartz with glitter sparkle. It doesn't stain. If I don't wipe something up straightaway (eg a coffee mug stain) then barkeepers friend gets it off no problem and was recommended by the manufacturer for cleaning.

SpringSprungALeak · 24/03/2024 21:56

I think im going with wood. There are so many products you can use to seal it now. I'll probably do that.

Housebuildhelp · 24/03/2024 22:11

@Kleavers I'm looking at Howdens.. did they supply the worktop too or did you have to order separately?

IHeartKingThistle · 24/03/2024 22:13

Wood laminate. I don't want to be worrying about it all the time and it looks great still after 10 years.

SabreIsMyFave · 24/03/2024 22:23

My kitchen is white, and my surface counter is dark-ish green.

Terracotta granite worktop and terracotta porcelain floor tiles.
Walls are white tiles with random terracotta tiles and very light brown.

We used a high quality polyurethane with a satin finish and it's gorgeous. The satin finish is much more natural looking than a gloss finish.

You definitely need to get laminate then, whether you go with wood-effect or a different design.
