IKEA Malm drawers

We have a large 6 drawer Malm set and are moving house. (See pic)

It won't fit in any of the bedrooms as it is but could I split it and buy 2 separate 80cm work tops? And have 2 smaller chest of drawers?

Think I may need to buy 1 additional side panel too?

Will ikea swap anything or will I just have to get rid of the 160cm top and buy 2 80cm ones?

Thanks

Do you mean you want to cut it in half? Unless it’s brand new or has a fault I can’t imagine ikea would swap it.

BG2015 · 04/03/2024 20:43

No you don't need to actually cut in half. The 2 pieces go together with a central piece with the drawer slats on either side. It's 2 60cm together with a different middle section and a 160cm top.

I reckon with a few extra pieces we could salvage it and make it into 2 three drawers.

I don't think they sell any of the malm in parts like that.

It would probably sell for a decent price 2nd hand though

BG2015 · 04/03/2024 20:48

It's not even 12 months old. I reckon IKEA could help us out with the correct parts.

Would you not need 2 x side panels with drawer runners and 2 x 80cm tops? If you can buy individual parts and the dims match the 80cm model it should work. You could cut the back panel in half possibly?

You may be right.

Ask them. They sometimes have end panels and tops you can buy in their bargain corner/ circular hub.
or they will buy it off you and give you vouchers. Depending on the condition.

MountSylvia · 04/03/2024 20:51

This seems like an overly complicated plan. Even if you can split them you would need a new top and two sides. I've got some malms and they aren't the best quality furniture.

I'd just put it on a local selling site. Even Ikea circular hob would be a pain as you will, have to get it there and it's massive.

Lifebeganat50 · 04/03/2024 20:53

You’d be better off selling it and starting again-Malm sells well second hand.
by the time you faff about butchering it and trying to get tops and sides for it you’ll probably be cheaper selling and putting the difference to 2 separate chests….and Malm doesn’t move well

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 04/03/2024 20:55

Or
go to circular hub and see if there’s a malm you can buy to use for parts.

Or you could get new tops cut to size at b&q. And paint it.

GetWhatYouWant · 04/03/2024 20:57

Why don't you just contact IKEA via your local store or their customer services as they suggest on their website, instead of asking on here? They definitely do small spare parts for free eg doorknobs as I've had some sent to me. Re larger parts it says contact store or customer services. You'll get a definite answer for your particular furniture whereas no one on here can do that for you.

I agree with all of this even moving one from room to room is hard

Ikea do a buy back service. I sold my side table and drawers back to them. It's in their website, fill in the form, they offer you a price then to take it in...

caringcarer · 04/03/2024 21:51

I'd just sell it on marketplace and buy two smaller units.

Mogdidabadthing2 · 12/03/2024 20:08

It does sell really well so I'd sell too

BG2015 · 12/03/2024 21:22

My issue is that we live in a 3 storey house and we will have to get it out and down the stairs.

Either way, it's got to come out unless my buyer wants it.

@BG2015 we just disassembled ours and put it back together again
In the new house

BG2015 · 12/03/2024 21:38

Unfortunately it won't fit in any of the bedrooms as we're downsizing.

@BG2015 sorry I
Missed that bit.

GrumpyPanda · 12/03/2024 21:45

I'd check the code numbers for all the components parts, then contact IKEA about the ones you're missing specifically.
