What are the chances of curtains I make myself looking decent?

I need new living room curtains, the current ones were made to measure 25 years ago and are very faded.

I also need a challenge/project. My mum is an accomplished seamstress and tried to get me interested as a child. I actually made some clothes with a lot of help as a teenager, so I should be able to work out how to set the sewing machine up (assuming it still works!), but I haven't done anything since.

It's a massive window, not quite floor length, so there's some leeway to not have the length completely accurate. The amout of fabric needed will be expensive, so don't want to waste it.

What do I need to know about buying fabric and lining? What kind of header would you go for?

I got a book which told me exactly how to make curtains and what to buy and they turned out really well.

If you have a big enough table or space to spread out the fabric and will be confident handling the weight of the fabric, go for it.

I’d make “eyelet” curtains to ensure they slip and slide along the pole easily.

The fabric shop should help you with advice about material and linings. You might want blackout lining etc?

In your shoes, I’d lack confidence to attempt long/large curtains but maybe after using your machine to make small items you’ll get the hang of it? Cushion covers is a good place to start getting the hang of your machine again.

Are there machine sewing classes near you?

I can help you.
Why are you making curtains that don't touch the floor would be my first question.
What is the length of the track or pole
Take 3 or 4 measurements from the top of the track/ pole to the floor
OR measure the old curtains
Do you want a plain or patterned fabric?
Do not go for eyelet curtains

After years of making header-tape curtains I learned how to make hand pleated ones by following a Sew Helpful on-line tutorial. They have one for 'beginners' - pencil pleat curtains. The website includes a fabric calculator. They also sell codes for very detailed video lessons.

I've made curtains a couple of times. My tip would be to get checked fabric & follow the lines! I can't cut a straight edge to save my life.
