Anyone do that European two duvets on one bed thing?

We've been thinking of ditching the one duvet and going for two. DP runs massively hot and I like to cocoon, which normally leads to me hogging the whole thing.

We currently have a double bed with a king size duvet on it. Do we go for two singles, or two doubles? I’m veering to two doubles as I get cold, but he thinks two singles. Help?!

A bigger bed is out of the question currently for financial reasons.

If you want the bed to look nice during the day, fold the double duvet and put a throw over the top of it all

We have a super king with 2 single duvets. Dh also has a wedge pillow to stop him snoring, and I have a wool blanket over the top of my duvet. I also have one of those giant back cushions with arm rests to put on the bed in the evening if I'm escaping my family. Our bed does not look tidy but we are comfy.

Oddly with the two double coverless duvets folded lengthways our bed looks smarter than it did with the big old superking duvet. Mainly as DH actually bothers to do his side properly now, furry pillow propped behind the regular pillows and all! Never thought I'd see the day after 20 years of marriage! Or that I would find a 10 tog duvet warm enough when it's -5 outside.

We had a ginormous bed in a rental once (like, wider than long), and I kept our king size duvet. We bought DH a thicker double to go with it.
To make bed - put smaller duvet on bed. Cover whole lot with bigger duvet.

Why not have a double for you - your prefered size and a single for him?

I don't see why the duvets have to overlap in the middle when you make the bed. Two double duvets folded lengthways on a kingsize bed fit perfectly. Surely if they overlap you just pull them a bit more to each side, or am I making it too simple? 🤔

They might overlap or end up upside down at night but who cares? Better than having a duvet tug of war at 4am.

We have 2 singles on a super king, with a teddy throw from dunelm on top (£20). Cosy.

I wrap the duvet around myself more than a single duvet allows. I'm 5'7" and a size 12 so a medium sized person

Thank you for your explanation @shearwater2 I am the same height and size as you but would be too hot if I did that.

We travelled to different countries and hotels then (and lived in different countries, in my case in several European countries, and I still would not call this a 'European thing').

Oh for goodness sake, it is a European thing. I don’t know why you’re so adamant it’s not.

My parents moved to Germany 35 years ago and when they bought a new bed, this was the standard bedding arrangement. I’d literally never seen it anywhere else before but I thought it was a great idea so adopted it here. You don’t see the two quilts on any UK bedding adverts or in shops, even now.

Well now I feel all cosmopolitan and sophisticated, because I have two duvets. one 10 tog and one 4 tog. Its really all due to menopause night sweats, and me flinging off the old kingsize one, but I'm going with the 'its a European thing' from now on. I feel I'm getting notions above my station.

Thank you to the poster who suggested two European singles. It’s been a week now and it’s glorious being able to burrito wrap in my own duvet without stealing DPs!

It's so good!! And changing the bedding is no longer a frustrating work out.
