Anyone do that European two duvets on one bed thing?

We've been thinking of ditching the one duvet and going for two. DP runs massively hot and I like to cocoon, which normally leads to me hogging the whole thing.

We currently have a double bed with a king size duvet on it. Do we go for two singles, or two doubles? I’m veering to two doubles as I get cold, but he thinks two singles. Help?!

A bigger bed is out of the question currently for financial reasons.

2 single wool ones of completely different togs.

Dorriethelittlewitch · 25/02/2024 20:53

We have 2 King size duvets. They can be fastened together but we just have them in separate covers. One is thicker than the other. We also have a throw in case it's extra cold.

How do you make your bed look tidy with two?

I don't 😂 we make them but it doesn't look like a picture from a magazine!

PPTorPDF · 25/02/2024 20:56

We had 2 singles on holiday recently and it was awful. We both kept waking up as had limbs coming out of the duvets all the time. Worst week of sleep we've ever had.

lostinlego · 25/02/2024 20:56

Yes it's a game changer! We have 2 king-size duvet on a super king bed. I have a really thin one and he has a really thick one. Made sleeping so much better.

AttaThat · 25/02/2024 20:56

Two doubles on a king bed for us!

But the beauty of this is you can each get whatever you want.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 25/02/2024 20:56

Interesting - we've been thinking of doing this as DH is a duvet-hogger and seems to wrap it round himself once we've fallen asleep - for more than 20 years I've been waking up multiple times in the night clinging to a tiny scrap. Hadn't realised it didn't have to be two singles!

Simonjt · 25/02/2024 20:59

We have two small double duvets on a superking bed, he runs cold and I run warm. However we still ended up in one as we tend to sleep very close together, so in the last few weeks I sewed two duvets together, one half is 2 tog and the other 12, seems to be working so far.

ImRen · 25/02/2024 21:01

It's a game changer. I sleep so much better for it. It's also easier to wash the duvets.

PurplePansy05 · 25/02/2024 21:03

It's really not a "European thing", not sure what makes you say that...I know many British couples doing it. Perfect for peri and menopause and if you have young DCs and get up a lot at night! Also hotels all over the world offer it. You obviously get decent sleep. But it's more bed linen and IMO it works if you like plain bedding (I do).

PigeonChess · 25/02/2024 21:06

two here I would never go back to one, I have a heavy super king as I like to fold it and sleep basically inside it, dh has a light double one

PurplePansy05 · 25/02/2024 21:06

DiscoBeat · 25/02/2024 20:45

That's important too! But I would like my bed to look tidy. Just wondering how people make it look neat.

You buy a large bed spread/throw + various size cushions and cover both duvets. Surely it's not dissimilar to having one large size duvet.

IcaMorgan · 25/02/2024 21:07

I have a king sizenduvet that’s 4.5tog on one half and 10.5tog on the other half. Works perfectly for us as he likes a lightweight while I like a heavier one.

BarelyLiterate · 25/02/2024 20:34

We do two singles on a super king bed, which works well, as one of us is a hot person, the other is cold. It’s a no-brainer, and I don’t know why more people don’t do likewise. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Two people plus two double duvets on a standard size double bed sounds rather overcrowded.

Yes, DP worries that two double in a double bed will end up crowded. I’m concerned about not being able to wrap fully in a single duvet.

We’ve both dismissed the idea of one double and one single; how we would make that bed in the morning and have it look good escapes us both!

Yes, I hadn't thought about a throw - we don't have a throw so I was just wondering how to make it look nice with the joins. Although we do have a throw on the spare bed, as we don't put bedding on unless we have guests, which can be months between.

RedRosie · 25/02/2024 21:16

We do. Secret to a happy marriage IMHO.

Two double duvets on a king sized bed. Same bedding (although different weight duvets). Looks fine. After airing they go back on folded lengthways. I think singles would do, but my husband is 6 foot 3, so thinks he wouldn't get enough coverage.

OddBoots · 25/02/2024 20:45

We've had our own duvets for over 25 years, various sizes depending on how big the bed is and what we feel like at the time.

When we go on holiday the worst bit is choosing between sharing a bed and having to only have one duvet or booking a twin room and not being able to share a bed.

If we share a bed on holiday (which we only do if it's kingsize or bigger) we just ask for an extra duvet Smile

We have had single duvets for years. Don't know how it's even possible to share. Husband used to have a double and me a single but now we have two singles.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 25/02/2024 21:24

We upped the ante, post empty nest and got 2 separate bedrooms, we love it. Mine has open window and flat sheets, his has heating on and 15 tog quilt and closed window.

Yep. Yep doubles on a super king. Perfect

GivingOutYards · 25/02/2024 21:40

Two singles on a super king, game changer. Never ever going back to one duvet.

HermioneWeasley · 25/02/2024 21:44

My parents always had two singles and we have followed suit as DP is a complete duvet hog. It’s the key to a happy marriage.

What if you went on holiday to Scandinavia? Problem sorted!

kitsuneghost · 25/02/2024 22:02

We have 2 doubles. Sometimes i think we would have been better with 2 singles as it can be a bit cumbersome but would probably miss the doubles if we changed

DH is 6'2". He's never had issues with a single duvet. Unless you are very large it shouldn't be an issue. Two doubles on a king sized bed aren't going to fit and be practical.

I'd never go back to a shared duvet. DH would. He's insufferably warm in summer and in winter I want more layers than him. This also doesn't account for him stealing the duvet.
