Anyone do that European two duvets on one bed thing?

We've been thinking of ditching the one duvet and going for two. DP runs massively hot and I like to cocoon, which normally leads to me hogging the whole thing.

We currently have a double bed with a king size duvet on it. Do we go for two singles, or two doubles? I’m veering to two doubles as I get cold, but he thinks two singles. Help?!

A bigger bed is out of the question currently for financial reasons.

I have a double duvet, single sized weighted blanket and up to 3 fleece blankets on my bed. Only me in it. Not sure I could ever cope with sharing a bed again, let alone the duvet!

Super king bed and two duvets here...it's bliss!

Yes, only works if Super King size. Perfect.

DivaDroid · 25/02/2024 22:10

King size bed, 2 single duvets. 4.5 for me, 10.5 or 13.5 for DH (I can't remember)
Matching covers - total game changer!
We switched autumn last year & both slept so much better. I work shifts & hes 9-5, and we used to disturb each other, but not any more.
And I'm at a much better temp for sleeping

NewName24 · 25/02/2024 22:25

We’ve both dismissed the idea of one double and one single; how we would make that bed in the morning and have it look good escapes us both!

Who are you showing your bed to ? Confused

We've had a thin double with a heavier single on my side as I like to be snuggled in a warm bed but dh just emits heat and feels suffocated in what I feel comfortable in. We just pull the duvets straight (whoever gets up later), and don't generally take anyone on tours of our bedroom.

eengeweldigedag · 25/02/2024 22:26

A normal single is too small for me, so we got the European size singles from Ikea. Just right! Smaller duvets are easier to put into the covers as well 👏🏻

Super king and two single duvets here. Changed after staying in a hotel in Germany with this set up.

We do two singles on a super king bed, which works well, as one of us is a hot person, the other is cold. It’s a no-brainer, and I don’t know why more people don’t do likewise. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Two people plus two double duvets on a standard size double bed sounds rather overcrowded.

I wish we had gone for two singles on our superking. I agree that two doubles sounds OTT.

Copperoliverbear · 25/02/2024 22:40

Two doubles x

fernsandlilies · 25/02/2024 22:41

We have a double each in winter and a single each in summer.

As pp said, to make it tidy you can fold them both lengthways, and put a bedspread on top if you want.

I guess another option would be a partner duvet, this sort of thing (picked at random not a recommendation):

I’m a duvet hog. He definitely wants his own!

Ohhhhh this could work! Thank you. I’ll go check it out.

Yes, we had that on holiday last summer then switched to two duvets at home. No way was I arsed to change two duvet covers though, so coverless duvets enabled it. We have two doubles (folded lengthwise in the daytime) on a king size bed. They are fine all year round.

Oblomov24 · 26/02/2024 05:34

Interesting. I don't like a single duvet, it's far too small and doesn't wrap around me enough, so I'd need a double as a minimum.

shearwater2 · 26/02/2024 05:38

Yeah, I've never had a single duvet, except at university, and quickly realised my error.

greenacrylicpaint · 26/02/2024 05:50

yep
super kingsize, 2 matresses, 2 single duvets.
we go to bed and get up at different times and it's nice not to be disturbed.

What if you went on holiday to Scandinavia? Problem sorted!

We tend to holiday in the UK, we have gone overseas twice - in Iceland we shared a duvet but in Germany we had separate duvets as standard and that was brilliant.

How do you make your bed look tidy with two?

You put one duvet on and then the second on slightly overlapping in the middle. As long as you have matching duvet covers it barely shows.

We've had a superking with two mattresses and two single quilts for years. I hate stays in hotels where we have to share a double bed with a double quilt 😂.

It's really not a "European thing", not sure what makes you say that...I know many British couples doing it. Perfect for peri and menopause and if you have young DCs and get up a lot at night! Also hotels all over the world offer it. You obviously get decent sleep. But it's more bed linen and IMO it works if you like plain bedding (I do).

Every French, Italian and Austrian Hotel I’ve stayed in, in the countryside/mountains have had two single duvets on a large bed, so the previous poster can be forgiven for thinking the idea has been copied from there, I would agree.

British hotels IME usually have a large bed and one lot of bedding and North American hotels have two large beds.

I’ve never seen it here before those trips abroad. Never seen it on Rightmove either 😀

We travelled to different countries and hotels then (and lived in different countries, in my case in several European countries, and I still would not call this a 'European thing').

RandomPoster456 · 26/02/2024 07:39

Me and DP have the same issue and instead of having separate duvets we have one duvet but a dual control electric under blanket so I can have that extra warmth on my side but not on his. Not sure if this has been suggested or even an option for you but I’d go with two singles if I had to pick. ☺️

AsTheyPulledYouOutOfTheOxygenTent · 26/02/2024 07:48

We have a double duvet and two single duvets on our single bed. DH (runs hot) has one lightweight single and I (chilly) have the double and a single. Means that we have a lightweight duvet which covers us both available for cuddles (literal and euphemistic) when it's cold - singles aren't big enough.

The singles have white covers and the double duvet covers are patterned and have matching pillow, so if I can be arsed to primp the bed I can put the double on top of the singles.

MoiraMoira · 26/02/2024 07:56

We do. I don’t see any disadvantage. We don’t fight over duvets and I am perimenopausal so like a light duvet.

RampantIvy · 26/02/2024 08:07

How is a single duvet not big enough? Do people wrap the duvet completely round themselves? I just like to be under a duvet not inside one like a sausage roll.

shearwater2 · 26/02/2024 08:30

I wrap the duvet around myself more than a single duvet allows. I'm 5'7" and a size 12 so a medium sized person, but definitely like to feel cosy and warm at night and don't sleep soundly if I'm cold or uncovered, and a single duvet would end up on the floor when I turn over. I don't know how anyone could feel warm enough with a single duvet at this time of year even if it was thick, unless you run hot or keep the house very warm at night. Mind you, my resting heart rate is about 45 when I'm asleep so that would explain why I feel cold easily.
