Orchids because they last so long and come back reliably also

idontlikealdi · 25/02/2024 16:06

Peoneys are my favourite. Daffodils at this time of year and have the benefit of being cheap!

I like freesias, stocks and sunflowers at the appropriate time of year.

At this time of year, tulips for colour - they last ages if you trim the stems every couple of days - and hyacinths for fragrance. Otherwise lilies last a couple of weeks and I love the smell (although I know some don't!). I also like a big bunch of eucalyptus in the kitchen; it makes the whole house smell green and fresh, like a florist's.

Daffodils and tulips can't be beaten to be honest.
Lilies are my favourite but can stain terribly so have to be watched carefully before they droop.

NewName24 · 25/02/2024 16:17

Tulips.

though, if buying for myself I tend to get carnations - they always last so well.

At this time of year, you can't beat a bunch of daffs. Bright and cheerful but very cheap.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 25/02/2024 16:20

Daffs this time of year. Brings sunshine into the room.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 25/02/2024 16:21

I like daffs, tulips, peonies and mimosa though not all together. Lilies too, but only oriental or longi ones that are scented; my favourites are stargazer lilies. I do like orchids but they don't do anything so just look the same for weeks on end and aren't scented - you may as well buy a good fake!

Nellieinthebarn · 25/02/2024 17:17

I tend to buy things in season, so this week I got a couple of quids worth of daffs which are lovely and cheerful. I also like anything fragrant, roses, freesias and stocks are my favourites.

LoobyDop · 25/02/2024 17:50

I like tulips and roses in really bright primary colours- our kitchen walls are a deep blue, so orange, yellow, red and bright pink pop beautifully.

Richie23 · 25/02/2024 20:29

Tulips definitely.
I also really like spray carnations - whenever I’ve bought them they’ve always opened up really nicely and lasted quite a while before starting to wilt. And you get such a lovely range of colours.

PiggieWig · 25/02/2024 20:31

I tend to buy roses because they are safe for my cat. I like a mix of pink and white.

I love tulips too but they aren’t as feline friendly, and lilies are an absolute no.

weegiemum · 25/02/2024 20:46

At different times of year:

Daffs
Tulips
Sunflowers
Roses
Ornamental cabbage

Love yellow flowers the most but right now am still enjoying my Valentine's Day roses which have lasted amazingly well!

Timeforachocolate · 25/02/2024 21:08

Tulips or sunflowers as a treat.

SomersetTart · 25/02/2024 21:11

I buy those little pots of bulbs you can get for about £3 at the supermarket. At the moment I have daffodils and hyacinths on my window sill. They last longer than cut flowers and when they go over I plant the bulbs in my garden and they often flower there year after year.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/02/2024 21:17

Daffodils 💛💛💛

Davros · 25/02/2024 21:24

If you've got cats you have to be careful with flowers. I've got a list from Cats Protection if anyone is interested

HamHand · 25/02/2024 21:28

Alstromeria for me too, the ones from Tesco reliably last 3 weeks. I like the look of daffodils but not braved any in the house for years now since we had a bunch that absolutely stank of sewage. Google tells me that this is a thing, so never risked it since. I like my flowers to be pretty scentless, which is a shame as I love eucalyptus but after a few days the scent gets too overwhelming and medicinal.

caringcarer · 25/02/2024 23:39

I love Lillie's but can't have them because I have cats that I love more.

I've got a Lego orchid. My DS bought it for me for Xmas. A huge joke about 'Here's a plant you can't kill Mum. Nope, he just wanted to build it for me.

dancinginthewind · 25/02/2024 23:58

I love tulips & peonies as they look good in a dramatic, blousy way even when they're past their fresh best

Bringtheweatherwithyou · 26/02/2024 00:04

Yellow tulips.

But.......I've never heard of trimming their stalks every day to make them last longer? Is this really true? I usually throw them away after a week?
