Room partition

I've got open shelves a bit like the ones in this picture but I'm not sure what I can actually put on them that won't get knocked off/broken as people go up the stairs! Any ideas?

Lots of books together so packed tightly. Hanging plants within the cube. Photo frames with blu tac on the bottom !

What about using some self-adhesive velcro on your items and the shelves so everything stays firmly in place?
