What to do with massive staircase wall

We’ve moved recently and the whole interior of the house is pale grey. The carpet is grey and new (vendors renovated to sell but not very well, as we are discovering) so we aren’t replacing it for a while yet. We have a massive wall that goes up two stories in the stairwell that we would like to do something with to add some character…or something. Previous owners had it covered with photo frames and have left all the holes behind but I hate dusting!

Its a very light and sunny part of the house so it could take something dramatic.

Things I’ve considered that are all on the current thread about interior design in AIBU about interior design things people hate…

Panelling (either real or wallpapered) - this would be a huge job if real and might look out of perspective because of the size.

Feature wall paper wall - I like pheasants, stags, hares etc but I’m worried this is dated.

Teal/sagey paint.

I’m not great at coming up with ideas and don’t want it to look rubbish as we don’t have an endless budget.

Any ideas please?

Go with something you love. You will look at this multiple times per day. It should make your heart sing.

None of these people lives in your house, and you're not trying to sell so it doesn't matter what others think.

Wallpaper and/or paint would be easy to replace if you try something and don't like it, or get bored of it.

Can you post a photo?

Neither of these are our house but are similar - you go up a few steps, the massive wall faces you and then you turn to go up the rest of the stairs.

I would do photos of yourself gradually deteriorating as an homage to Dorian Gray as you go upstairs every day. Bonus is you'll feel better coming downstairs.

If picture one is anything to go by, you live in a stately home, op!

What about a wall hanging?

… or two, depending on the space.

Fancy light fitting?

Hanging decorative installation?

@Gatekeeper Grin

OP we have this. We have art on the walls, it takes ages to pick a theme and look at how all the prints will work together and how you will place them but now it's done it does look good. We had white walls throughout and like abstract art from 1950s-80s. Lots of colour.
