What is your home decor style?

Following on from tablegate and some posters being incredibly critical (and often downright rude) about the OP's taste, how would you describe your home style?

I know for a fact mine is either love or loathe. It's pretty maximalist and very colourful. I have MCM furniture mixed with quite modern stuff too in an Edwardian house.I'd probably use the term eclectic.

Definitely no grey or minimalism here!

What about you?

Reflects my taste. Colour on the walls (whole room colour drenching), plush soft furnishings, well made curtains with pattern, pattern generally really. Forever evolving. Mid century furniture mainly Ercol. My house is 300 years old and I think it all works together - I love it anyway!

Cottage core, earthy tones, lot of sanded wood, concrete vases, shaker kitchen, wood burner, brick slips, panelling.

Ours is similar to yours. Love country cottage styles.

1930 seaside terrace.

Boho vibe :).

Bright colours, cushions, Indian rugs, throws, lots of plants and flowers, books and artworks on the wall.

I spent all my budget on the house so most of my furniture is stuff I bought from markets/charity shops that I then upcycled.

Restored a lot of the period features too.

Edited

This sounds amazing 🤩

Traditional/classic and eclectic. I live in a Victorian terraced house, so I’ve been working on re-instating original features, such as a cast iron fireplace.

I love getting furniture and home decor from FB marketplace, my favourite is a large gold ornate mirror!

Waitingforgeorge · 27/03/2024 13:11

Comfortable, practical and beautiful.

JaninaDuszejko · 27/03/2024 15:37

I think everyone aims for comfortable, practical and beautiful @Waitingforgeorge , it's just we all have different interpretations of what that means which results in all our different styles.

GrouchyKiwi · 27/03/2024 15:51

Rich colours, simple lines, with colourful fabrics. Lots of texture, though. I love strokable fabrics. So maybe minimalist maximalism? Who doesn't love an oxymoron?

We bought a house where the previous owner's style was pretty much the opposite of ours and are slowly making it our own. First job was to take down the curtains, which had pelmets, swagging, pleats, buttons, fringing and tassels.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/03/2024 15:58

Kind of Scandi-ish, fairly minimalist, but in anot especially stylish way Grin. I really like that style of decor, but don't really have the style sense or the motivation to make it look very good!

WinkyTinky · 27/03/2024 16:03

I've got Lucozade up the wall in the front room from about 2014.... 😐

My house is eclectic. A mish-mash of antique furniture - Arts and Crafts, MCM. My pride and joy are my 1950s Erik Worts dining chairs. Fabrics like kilim, suzani, ikat, Welsh and Scottish wool blankets, block printed Indian cottons. A burgeoning collection of studio pottery.

Various styles of lamps, including some from Ikea that I think are modern classics, like this one: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/varmblixt-led-table-wall-lamp-orange-glass-round-20525144/

A few house plants (though I'm terrible for accidentally killing them). I have a huge cheese plant, inspired by my grandparents who had one in their council house in Wigan in the 80s. It seemed so exciting and exotic to me as a child.

I do struggle to tread the line between my love for MCM and 70s / 80s Laura Ashley Neo-Victorian. They're not really compatible styles, but I think I just about get away with it. Ben Pentreath is a big inspiration, as is the Eames house.

I like the sound of this! I love all sorts - lots of pattern (William Morris, Liberty print and Marimmekko and plenty of others) and MCM furniture and style. I love plants and am pretty good at keeping them alive. I like colour especially greens and blues.

Rainbowbrite83 · 28/03/2024 21:11

We've just finished our stairs and upstairs landing renovation, and I think it looks fab! Pink and green themed with a striped carped edged in pink. Sounds hideous but it's worked so well I think!

Someone once said (I think it was supposed to be a put-down, but I took it as a compliment) that my home was like Laura Ashley's Nan's attic.

But my style varies depending on the property I'm decorating - I'm a chameleon, I can switch between the modern, the eclectic, the intense, the breezy, the old ...but it has to be comfortable, practical and beautiful - they are my only rules.

Janehasamane · 29/03/2024 10:48

I guess I have that house, the type you see on insta but no one thinks is liveable in,,its all muted shades ie large cream chesterfield fabric sofas, big olive green velvet armchair, mink velvet armchair in the smaller living room with similar cream sofas, colourful abstract cushions on them, exposed floor boards, big cream woollen rugs, Farrow and ball colours on the walls,ie French grey, pigeon, skimming stone, drop cloth, some colour matched, silk amd velvet Roman blinds in pale green, pale pink, teal, bronze , sand etc. weird and unusual antiques, lots of big floor standing plants at 5 foot to 7 foot, lots and lots of colourful artwork on the walls, from very old to modern, big ornate old mirrors, a couple of feature walls in wallpaper I like, woollen throws In soft greens and beige, big glass coffee tables, walnut furniture, white bed linen, with muted throws on top, tall vases of white orchids and lillies , lots of candles dotted round, scented and unscented.

its a very old house, lots of sandblasted pale oak beams and fireplaces, two wood burners, large baskets of logs at each, and I guess I have sort of followed how I have seen others do houses like this that I like and kept it light and airy. I think it would be considered tasteful/elegant, but would terrify anyone with small kids quite frankly or be called a unliveable show home on here.

but it’s my thing, I love all things interior design and making our home lovely for our taste and as a family we like it.

As long as it works for you who cares?

Startingagainandagain · 29/03/2024 11:38

Boho/arty/eclectic.

Live by the sea in a period property so anything too modern would look odd.

I have colourful rugs, cushions and lamps, lots of artworks, flowers, candles and plants.

Restored as much of the original features as I could. No carpet as I wanted to restore the original floorboards.

Paint: One bedroom has teal walls, another bedroom is emerald green. Rest of the house has cream walls.

Cats hair add to the decor...

Most of the furniture and decor are stuff I found in charity shops and then up-cycled.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/03/2024 11:43

It's a sprawling arts and crafts gaff. It's neat, tidy and very comfortable. The kitchen/family area is modern but in keeping. Other reception rooms are more traditional but a mixture of antiques from my grandparents/late father and some of the prints/pictures I bought in the 80s. It is bookish.

It is not minimalist, white or grey.

Oh I would take that as a compliment too.😜
Love Laura Ashley.;)

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/03/2024 12:49

Grizzly Adams co-habiting with the Munsters sort of style.

Giggorata · 29/03/2024 12:53

I have an old ex shop and not one square room, as it goes round a corner.
Lots of deep colour, colour drenching, rugs, stained glass lamps and screens at the windows. Old, salvaged and inherited antique furniture, velvet curtains, too many books, taxidermy, skulls, globes, curios, tat.
It makes it into my happy place.

It's been described as Eclectic Maximalism meets Dark Academia, but it's also been described as A Bookshop In Diagon Alley.

CoffeeWithCheese · 30/03/2024 21:03

At the moment... shabby minus the chic. Not much strong colour in the house at present as we've not got round to redecorating. I'd love the instagram strong colours and plants everywhere type eclectic look - but I think at the moment the kids would knock the plants over, the dog would eat the plants and DH gets a bit panicky at me suggesting some strong paint colours so I'm still working on him slowly.

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 30/03/2024 21:04

Granny chic.

FindingMeno · 05/04/2024 20:45

Boho scandi ish.
Love light woods, rattan, white. Lots of plants. Texture. Original art.
Also like to chuck in some classic hints.
