Following on from tablegate and some posters being incredibly critical (and often downright rude) about the OP's taste, how would you describe your home style?

I know for a fact mine is either love or loathe. It's pretty maximalist and very colourful. I have MCM furniture mixed with quite modern stuff too in an Edwardian house.I'd probably use the term eclectic.

Definitely no grey or minimalism here!

What about you?

Similar to you believe it or not, even to the age of the house.

luxuria84 · 12/02/2024 14:09

Both your houses sound right up my street!

Never been a fan of minimalism!

TheGrin · 12/02/2024 14:12

I like the styles in Downton Abbey😁

IncompleteSenten · 12/02/2024 14:42

Boring.

My walls are all white, my kitchen is white, my curtains are grey, my carpets are grey, my sofas and bedding are grey, I've got big yellow cushions on the sofas and lots of framed embroideries on the walls in lots of different colours.
Rug under the coffee table is yellow and grey.

It's not fashionable of course but I don't give a shit. I like it.

WhatsYourDamageHeather · 12/02/2024 15:09

Cottage core, earthy tones, lot of sanded wood, concrete vases, shaker kitchen, wood burner, brick slips, panelling.

Aria999 · 12/02/2024 20:22

Like wood, earthy tones, clean lines, different textures, wood floors with rugs on, not too much clutter.

In other people's homes I like plants but I can't see how you are meant to keep them alive if you are away for more than a week.

Dislike anything too elaborate, floral, frilly and also dislike anything too minimalist (wood floors without rugs are a bit too stark for me).

TwistedSisters · 12/02/2024 20:47

Country ish. House is in the middle of the country and was built in 1945 but has had a couple of recent extensions. Shaker kitchen with stone tiled floor , neutral paint colours (greige), deep skirtings, wood burner, built in bookcases and storage, wood effect karndean. Lots of cushions, lamps, rugs and throws. Fabric roman blinds in floral patterns apart from a couple of rooms which have heavy curtains. Random bits of original art that I've picked up at charity shops or antique places and had reframed. Kids rooms are bit more modern as that's what they wanted but still very much country vibe, we have sloped ceilings and random little nooks and crannies upstairs.

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/02/2024 20:48

My house is eclectic. A mish-mash of antique furniture - Arts and Crafts, MCM. My pride and joy are my 1950s Erik Worts dining chairs. Fabrics like kilim, suzani, ikat, Welsh and Scottish wool blankets, block printed Indian cottons. A burgeoning collection of studio pottery.

Various styles of lamps, including some from Ikea that I think are modern classics, like this one: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/varmblixt-led-table-wall-lamp-orange-glass-round-20525144/

A few house plants (though I'm terrible for accidentally killing them). I have a huge cheese plant, inspired by my grandparents who had one in their council house in Wigan in the 80s. It seemed so exciting and exotic to me as a child.

I do struggle to tread the line between my love for MCM and 70s / 80s Laura Ashley Neo-Victorian. They're not really compatible styles, but I think I just about get away with it. Ben Pentreath is a big inspiration, as is the Eames house.

VARMBLIXT LED table/wall lamp, orange glass/round, 30 cm When the light passes through the lamp’s orange glass, the soft donut-like shape shines with a warm glow. A magical sight that’s an eye-catcher, regardless if it’s on a table or hanging on a wall...

I think you can mix eras and styles. MCM furniture works really well in both period and modern houses.

I used to really love cottage style/ shabby chic too which can also work in a Victorian house. I have an amazing collection of 1950's Pyrex dishes!

Nowhere near as brave and bold as I’d love it to be! My favourite Instagram account is letsgotopoppys but I just don’t think I could pull that off Sad

I’ve managed to work quite a bit of pink into my decor, though! My living room is pink, green and gold and I LOVE it. Haven’t decorated upstairs yet, it’s all grey and soulless at the moment.

Rainbowbrite83 · 12/02/2024 21:40

Really like that lamp @TheLeadbetterLife

I have a 1970's German lamp that it reminds me a bit of.

The lamp in question

TheLeadbetterLife · 12/02/2024 21:42

Yes I once lived in a rented Georgian cottage. I couldn’t paint the walls but I went through a country cottage phase for those five years.

Generally I like to decorate in a style in keeping with the architecture of the house, without it becoming an aspic-preserved museum. That said, I do have a fantastic Laura Ashley book from the 80s, where their interiors team restores a Victorian townhouse that had been converted into flats. It’s a lot, but by god it’s fabulous.

My house is practically perfect in every way except one - road noise. If I could lift the whole thing 2km away I would. Maybe one day I’ll live in, or build, my dream house.

Really like that lamp @TheLeadbetterLife

Love that lamp! I have a 70s-style giant rice paper globe shade in the dining room. It glows like the moon and I have a smart bulb in it to change the intensity.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 12/02/2024 21:47

What is MCM?

Rainbowbrite83 · 12/02/2024 21:51

Mid century modern.

Furniture from the late 1940's to late 1960's.

The sort of brown stuff your nan had in her house in the 60's and 70's!

OP posts:
TheLeadbetterLife · 12/02/2024 21:51

Mid-century Modern. Designers like Eames, Saarinen, Wegner, Olaio. IKEA pioneered affordable versions of the style, and they often work with designers to make limited edition pieces which tend to become classics over time.

Rainbowbrite83 · 12/02/2024 21:52

I have a few Ercol things that I love.

OP posts:
TheLeadbetterLife · 12/02/2024 21:55

Oh yes Ercol is great. Olaio is the Portuguese equivalent of Ercol (I live in Portugal). Everyone of a certain generation has Olaio in their homes - so well designed and built, and of course now valuable as vintage pieces!

moggerhanger · 12/02/2024 21:57

Very mix and not necessarily match. The house is old farm workers cottages knocked through, so very low ceilings, small rooms, beams (which hold up the upstairs floors!) I have antique Art Deco sideboard, side table and round display cabinet (the latter being full of interesting rocks and fossils). These came with us from our previous house, where they fitted a bit better (1930s semi). Tatty mid-brown carpets which we're saving up to replace. Plain cream kitchen doors, dark green Corian surfaces, pine kitchen table and chairs. Brass and iron double bed and mahoosive Victorian mahogany three door wardrobe. Several bookcases but the cheap sort from Argos. Walls have a bunch of stuff - big brass tray from a holiday in Egypt, tapestry sampler of Great Britain dated 1798, wooden carved plaque made by my great grandad, oil painting of a landscape in the county I grew up....

Moier · 12/02/2024 21:58

A mixture of IKEA ( because l love the Chaise lounge for my disabilities ) and Boho.( I'm an old hippy gal) but not rubbish.. people say its colourful and tasteful.
Retro but not junk.

Punxsatawnyphil · 12/02/2024 21:59

Modern natural neutral japandi minimalism.

Basically neutral shades and green and lots of oak, acacia and mango wood furniture. Lots of plants, real and faux, candles and lamps but not many other things out on display.

I don't want a "white everywhere" house though and do like colour, I have dark green in my lounge and am planning a navy downstairs loo.

Puddingpieplum · 12/02/2024 22:01

Mid century scandi, but on the paler side of things, lots of whites, with colour throws in through soft furnishings. Some stonking pieces of art about the place. A fuck load of clutter the dc bring in daily is spoiling the vibe though. I live in a 60s house so stayed with the era.

Theresplendentemmaforbes · 12/02/2024 22:14

I follow a lot of maximalist interior accounts on Instagram but I don't have the panache to pull it off plus ALL that stuff to tidy around would drive me mad. I'm a maximalist voyeur but minimalist at heart.

My house is quite 'greige' but with a tiny bit of leopard print chucked in.
