What is your home decor style?

Following on from tablegate and some posters being incredibly critical (and often downright rude) about the OP's taste, how would you describe your home style?

I know for a fact mine is either love or loathe. It's pretty maximalist and very colourful. I have MCM furniture mixed with quite modern stuff too in an Edwardian house.I'd probably use the term eclectic.

Definitely no grey or minimalism here!

What about you?

I don’t have children, but I can’t have anything too nice because of the bloody pets I’ve been tricked into adopting. Rat entrails, hairballs and vomit practically every day in the kitchen. All my living room furniture is covered in washable blankets, and I’m already dreading the dogs’ moult. They’ve grown lovely thick coats this winter.

At least they can’t ruin my dining chairs.

Shithole101 · 12/02/2024 22:16

I would call mine a bit hit and miss . And rough round the edges

Mine too!

I live in a bohemian bric a brac shop. Almost literally: my house used to be an off licence, and is very unmodernised. I was on my absolute uppers when I moved here and it is furnished entirely from ebay and the community furniture store. I love it; lots of dark wood, velvet sofas, mid century oil paintings. I have a painted screen around my bed, which is in the front room/hallway/office, and a giant floor standing mirror with a huge wooden pelmet.

I cover up the chipped laminate floor with rugs and the bubbling damp with art. I like quirky things, like my vintage model placenta. I stencilled my kitchen tiles and made cushions out of mid century curtains. The high ceilings distract me from the wobbly floors, and the big windows distract me from the fact that there isn't a right angle in the place. I love my silly house.

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/02/2024 23:23

Art Deco with a hint of grubby paintwork and carpets that have seen better days.

flatmop · 13/02/2024 15:05

Mine is a work in progress as it's a new (to us) house. I've been quite bold with the paint colours so far including colour drenching. They're all downstairs and jewel toned. I think I'll lighten things up upstairs but I'm not really sure how to manage it so the whole house works together 🤷🏻‍♀️ I kind of chose 3 bold colours I loved, slapped them on then realised there's more to decorating than just paint. Ah well.

BabCNesbitt · 13/02/2024 15:11

@Ketzele I'd love to see pictures! It sounds fabulous!

TheBirdintheCave · 13/02/2024 15:15

Minimalist in terms of the amount of things we have.

Walls are largely all white but each room has a feature wall (either stencilled or wallpapered). Hall is painted sky blue 3/4 of the way up.

Accent colours are bright and bold. I find neutrals really boring.

Themes are Art Deco and Japan and nearly every room features one or both of these elements somehow.

The downstairs toilet is randomly maximilist and features a large amount of monkeys 😂

RosyappleA · 13/02/2024 17:34

I realised my living room felt like an office. Blinds, all white and beige. So I got some terracotta linen-like voiles and some other off-white textured geometric ones. Some accent cushions with the terracotta theme and darker wooden pieces. Looks especially nice with the brass floor lamps on in the evening. I actually like being at home now.

D20 · 13/02/2024 19:21

I’m not sure mine has a style name.

Enduring modern? 1980s house so partly limited because it’s so easy for styles to look ‘changing rooms’. We try to buy to last longer than short-lived trends. I still love my warm grey bathroom that we installed before grey was a thing. Bought because we liked it not because it was fashionable.

LoobyDop · 14/02/2024 20:15

Mostly modern organic mixed with industrial. Lots of chunky oak furniture, lots of plants and lots of fairy lights. It’s a 90s townhouse, but traditional style rather than very modern on the outside, so reasonably versatile. When we moved in every room was white- we’re about half way through changing that. So far we’ve gone royal blue, metallic bronze, pale grey, blush pink and part charcoal, part soft white.

DramaAlpaca · 14/02/2024 20:31

Mine is a 20 year old self build, but it's not a particularly modern style. It's an eclectic mix of new and antique furniture, some of which was inherited, wooden floors, rugs, full bookcases, paintings and treasures picked up from my travels. Plus I'm very fond of colour and I like interesting textures. I have lots of lamps, lighting is really important to set a mood. Minimalism is definitely not for me.

cornflower21 · 22/02/2024 08:25

I really like English cottage vibe, countryside vibe- lots of floral patterns, earthy tones, shabby assorted furniture, either just plain wooden furniture, lots cushions and patchwork throws.
Freshly cut flowers, white or cream ceramic.
Shaker style kitchen.

Startingagainandagain · 22/02/2024 09:25

1930 seaside terrace.

Boho vibe :).

Bright colours, cushions, Indian rugs, throws, lots of plants and flowers, books and artworks on the wall.

I spent all my budget on the house so most of my furniture is stuff I bought from markets/charity shops that I then upcycled.

Restored a lot of the period features too.

SoupDragon · 22/02/2024 09:37

I'd probably use the term eclectic.

Me too. Also known as "stuff I like" 😂

I tend to go roughly by the William Morris quote about having things you believe to be beautiful or know to be useful. I love going to charity shops and have been replacing my functional ikea things with older items.

Cosycover · 22/02/2024 09:39

I have lots of wood and oversized furniture. Huge lampshades etc. Wooden walls.

But not very bright. I prefer black, grey, beige and white.

DH made some of our furniture too.

After spending my 20s surrounded by IKEA furniture everyone else had I wanted something different.

TheBirdintheCave · 22/02/2024 09:39

@Startingagainandagain As an art deco lover, it's so great to hear you actually valued and restored the features of the period house you bought! I often wonder why people bother buying older houses if they're not fans of the beautiful features they come with (fireplaces and doors etc). There are plenty of modern white boxes to be purchased if that's their aesthetic.

TheBirdintheCave · 22/02/2024 09:42

@SoupDragon We found our 30s drinks cabinet in a charity shop. We thought it was 70s does 30s repro until we had it dated by a furniture expert when we found a maker's label. Someone had wall papered over the original silk backing with some kind of horrible 90s flock. It took us AGES to get that damn stuff off without ruining the silk.

Well done for persevering!

I need to work out how to removed a horrible dark stain from a pair of old wooden boxes used to store sewing thread in a shop without removing the branded transfer from underneath.

TheBirdintheCave · 22/02/2024 11:08

@SoupDragon Yeesh that sounds like it will be tricky!

NamechangedH · 22/02/2024 11:21

When I look up home videos on YouTube, the ones that I love are owned by posh gay couples living in the Cotswolds, usually featured by House and Gardens. So that's what I aim for.

I love houses where people show what they love, I couldn't hear to live somewhere like that Letsgotopoppys house but I love that she's so true to her personal style.

Bridenope · 22/02/2024 11:38

Southwestern Boho particularly the downstairs and main bedroom. Since having DC I’ve had to rehome my cacti which throws off the balance a smidge but one day I’ll get to live out my best Santa Fe fantasy again!
(the exterior clashes massively being a semi-detached 80’s build) oh well

Citygirlrurallife · 22/02/2024 15:38

We're renovating a 70's bungalow that has had a few extensions put on over the years (and not very thoughtfully) so no period features to take into account. I think it depends on the house really - if I had a Victorian or Georgian house I think I'd go for very dramatic and bold colours but this house is a bit of a blank canvas. I thought I wanted the Japandi aesthetic but realised I like colour and with two children and 3 pets it would never achieve the clean minimalist look that stye kind of demands.

I hate random stuff everywhere (looking around me in dismay at random piles of shit) but I love art on the walls and books on the shelves. I like other's maximalist styles but I don't think I could cope with the clutter it often comes along with. I'm also though not a fan of extreme minimalism and monochrome/greige and mirrored furniture.

Our house is probably a kind of Danish aesthetic if anything? Colours that are bright but in keeping with kind of natural colours (blues, yellows, greens etc) and lots of wood. I like my home to make people feel happy and welcome and comfortable and give a facade of calm. I'm hoping for lots of plants but I'm a bit hopeless at keeping them alive. Our kitchen cabinets are yellow and oak with a green and beige floor and limewashed walls, our hallway will be colour blocked but mostly a pale peach, our upstairs bedroom sage green with a microcemented en suite.

Having said that I have a teeny tiny reading room all to myself which I am colour drenching in deep forest green, getting a pink chaise longe for and adorning the walls with art that's just for me - oh and randomly our downstairs bathroom is also ridiculously maximalist and features a lot of monkies @TheBirdintheCave !! I do think you should go wild with your downstairs bathroom though, why not have some fun with it.

TheBirdintheCave · 22/02/2024 15:44

@Citygirlrurallife Haha what a coincidence! 😂

JaninaDuszejko · 22/02/2024 17:06

Our house is 1920s and has lots of original features. I love MCM and always default to that when buying for the house, I spend a lot of money on Vinterior and ebay buying vintage furniture and accessories. I like white walls, cool bright colours (lots of blues with pink, red and a touch of green) and Marimekko fabrics. Thousands of books (on Vitsœ shelving), lots of lamps, original abstract art (not expensive, lots by family), and vintage studio pottery and art glass. I don't like mass produced art and we have just one calendar up with family photos. My kid's friends say our house is 'bougie' which DD1 tells me is a compliment.

My worst nightmare would be an maximalist house in the English country style with lots of floral wallpaper and fabric and ruffles.
