How old is your kitchen?

Mine will be 25 this year. Not sure whether to throw it a party or trade it in for a younger model.

it was in the house when we got it and had already been in 5 years then. Everything still works, microwave, oven, hob (have replaced the dishwasher more than once. It is a nice neutral homely style but looking a bit tatty. I have been planning to update it since we moved in 20 years now. Never could be arsed, also am indecisive about what I want and always something else to spend money on.

you?

I think ours is close to 30, I've seen paperwork that the kitchen extension went in in the 90s and I doubt it's been changed since then. Doors a little wonky and it's been shifter around as at some point someone blocked up the entrance to the dining room and put a new door in - we sprayed the doors and wrapped the worktop when we moved in as it was very ugly - been planning a new kitchen since then but we had a baby instead so that's on the back burner 😂 (although she's four now!)
I'd love a new one but the bathroom is more pressing so we are focusing on that and potentially delaying by another five years for my dreamy kitchen ....

18 months, I say go for it and give your house a new lease of life!

DomesticatedSavage · 12/02/2024 19:03

25 years old, still in decent order but obviously looks dated! We’ve replaced the oven once but everything else - tiles, sink, worktops, floor etc all original.

Caspianberg · 12/02/2024 19:08

2 years now. It replaced a falling apart kitchen that way last put in in 1964 ( found the detailed reciept taped behind a kitchen cabinet).
It was already falling apart tbh when we bought the house, but we lived with it another 5 years whilst saving for a new one.

ohtowinthelottery · 12/02/2024 19:20

20 years. I'm thinking of getting the units resprayed rather than replacing the whole kitchen.

NewName24 · 12/02/2024 19:22

20 years next month

What is the etiquette here? Do I need to throw my kitchen a birthday party ?

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 12/02/2024 19:28

Nineties, as far as I can tell. Going by style and when building work was done by previous owners. It’s not really to our taste but is still serviceable and very far down on the list of priorities.

MaryActsLikeSheDontCare · 12/02/2024 19:31

20 years. We got it spray painted about 4 years ago, which made a huge difference. The worktop and wall tiles aren’t to my taste anymore, but I can’t see us changing it for 5 years or so

scrivette · 12/02/2024 19:44

About 30, maybe slightly more. One day I am going to have a brand new one chosen by me - one day!

achangewoulddougood · 12/02/2024 19:46

18 years, 19 in 3 months! I might have to make a cake...

Darklingthrush123 · 12/02/2024 22:21

Ours is 70s with some older cupboards probably from the 50s or 60s. And if it wasn’t breaking I would keep it. I like the vintage style

App13 · 12/02/2024 22:23

1 year, previous one was there since 2005, so 17 yrs. It was a homebase one that coat 2300. And was absolutely solid , no issues for many years

Pigglyplaystruant99 · 12/02/2024 23:03

15 years old, not dated imho and I still love it.

muckymayhem · 12/02/2024 23:06

I don't know but I hate it and it's falling apart! High gloss cupboards (in a terrible colour) - I'm going to guess 13-15 years as we've been here ten.

PickAChew · 12/02/2024 23:17

It's a builders' Howdens special from when the house was renovated about 18 years ago. Already looked tatty when we moved in but is really beginning to peel and look a mess, now. Replacing won't be a quick job because the integrated dishwasher that died a few years ago had sprung a leak and the floor is rather bouncy, there.

Noseyoldcow · 12/02/2024 23:39

Ours is Wickes, vintage 1992. Was in fashion, went out of fashion, and with a lick of paint is back in fashion, so rather good value, eh? Units a bit worn in (unseen) places, but essentially good, although all the appliances and the worktops and sink/taps have been replaced.

Growlybear83 · 12/02/2024 23:45

We installed out kitchen when we moved to our current house in 1992, and I still love it as much as I did then.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 12/02/2024 23:48

21 years. It still looks good to me and everything works, so we are not planning to make any changes for the foreseeable.

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyHusband · 12/02/2024 23:49

Couple of centuries or least it looks like it.

caringcarer · 13/02/2024 01:00

Mines about 12 years old. I really still like it. It's a solid oak one with granite worktops. It's totally out of fashion and not white/cream/grey or shiny but it's solid and looks good with decent appliances and a range cooker that I use most days.

Surgarblossom · 13/02/2024 01:12

10 years old.

HeraSyndulla · 13/02/2024 01:23

Appliances changed but Aga and the rest is early 1960’s. It was specifically made and fitted for our kitchen by previous owner. Expensive and well made and still in remarkably good condition.

kitchenplans · 13/02/2024 14:54

Ours is less than a year old, but it replaced one that already looked dated, old and tatty when we moved in in 2003. I suspect it was 15-20 years old at that point so possibly as old as 40+ years by the time we replaced it.

We always intended to upgrade the old one, but life, children and other things got in the way, and then we realised we really wanted to extend, so it didn't seem worth putting in a new kitchen just to rip it out in a few years! So happy we've finally done it though, and living with the old, substandard one for so long really helped me know what I wanted from the new kitchen!

HideTheCow · 15/02/2024 12:10

The kitchen was 11 years old when we moved in, already had peeling fronts and tiny and we knew we would be doing a kitchen extension. We waited 3 years and now that extension kitchen is 11 years old but looks pristine. I have resealed the worktop to the upstands but because it cost so much I really looked after it.

We have replaced the oven and combi microwave as well as the dishwasher as they died but I am bored of the colour so am planning on having it painted or wrapped with vinyl next year for its 12th birthday. Not ripped out because it works brilliantly and I abhor waste.

TemplesofDelight · 15/02/2024 12:23

Ugh. Ours is partly 'barely altered Edwardian kitchen' (big recess under chimney breast where an open range used to be, obviously aimed at servants --servant access obscured door to what must have been a dining room, entrance from front hall deliberately obscured when front door is opened, way out to two stone buildings in the back yard which I imagine were a washhouse/scullery and a servant's loo) and the cabinets, worktops, and integrated appliances (at least the ones that still work) date from I believe 1992, when the people we bought the house from moved in, and, judging by the dates on the windows, changed the windows, installed a kitchen and then separated and let the house go to rack and ruin, and be inhabited by their student sons and their friends).

We're saving to extend and redo it. In the meantime, I try not to look at the marble-style work surfaces, which are brown and mottled with glinty bits, and look like a cutprice tombstone.
