How old is your kitchen?

Mine will be 25 this year. Not sure whether to throw it a party or trade it in for a younger model.

it was in the house when we got it and had already been in 5 years then. Everything still works, microwave, oven, hob (have replaced the dishwasher more than once. It is a nice neutral homely style but looking a bit tatty. I have been planning to update it since we moved in 20 years now. Never could be arsed, also am indecisive about what I want and always something else to spend money on.

you?

Eh 3 months… last one we put in when we moved in 13 years ago, it was a relatively budget kitchen and looked dated. Hope i get 13 years out my new one.

daffodilandtulip · 15/02/2024 12:27

Will be two years in the summer. I replaced a 20yo one and it made me so happy.

Now in the similar delaying tactics for the bathroom.

15 year old IKEA kitchen put in by previous owners. it is starting to look tatty and i'm thinking of replacing it but not sure if I can justify the expensive. it hasn't completely fallen apart yet.

nokidshere · 15/02/2024 12:41

6 years old here. The original one was 25yrs old and was always 'not suitable for purpose', awful layout and no work surfaces. By the time this one is 25yrs old I can't imagine I'll be doing much in it if I'm still around at all.

Trumpton · 07/04/2024 08:38

We had our built in 1993 when we moved into this house.
A friend had a hand-made kitchen business and he asked if he could quote for us. We told him we couldn’t afford him but fell in love with the ash units he showed us.
We stretched our budget and have never ever regretted it. The kitchen is still immaculate and as the units are all solid wood and in frame there has been no warping.
The Corian work surfaces are going to be re polished this year and we need to replace the floor (not flooring, the actual floor as that has sagged a bit) but our builder has assured us he can work around the units.
MIL’s kitchen ( B&Q) had one careful lady owner and needed replacing after 12 years.

ErnestCelendine · 07/04/2024 08:45

10 years old I think - we replaced the worktop (was real wood but not looked after) and added tiles when we moved in 3 years ago.

MrKDilkington · 07/04/2024 08:52

6 years. We put it in.
I've already painted the units a different colour, so it feels even newer!

BigSkies2022 · 10/04/2024 17:15

Howdens glossy white, black quartz worktop, stainless steel sink, somewhat stained. Put in by previous owners, about 16 years old. Starting to peel in places and I really want to replace it. You know when you get to a point that you really resent cleaning something, because you just don't like it any more? However, can't see it happening before 2026. I'd really like to brick up the existing back door, kick out the windows and make them into doors, put in underfloor heating and terracotta flooring, have a proper extraction system ducting outside, and not a stupid filter paper thing, which does SFA. Not an extension, but a reconfiguration of the footprint. None of this comes cheap, so I'm continuing to clean the hateful worktop and reseal the sink while looking at Plykea kitchens and fantasising about warm floors.

peloton2024 · 10/04/2024 17:32

18 years
Looks fine and I can't afford a new one. I do hate the beige tiles but I didn't choose them (new build)

How old is your kitchen?
Greywitch2 · 10/04/2024 17:58

I don't know. We've lived here 25 years and it was already in and looked 'lived in' at that point. I suspect it's probably from the 80s.

fitflopqueen · 10/04/2024 18:10

Ours is 25 yrs old, I still love it, butter yellow colour, some of the base doors now need replacing as paint peeling and can’t be sanded (damn you MDF). Cooker still fine but that’s a range, on second dishwasher though, that’s the only fitted appliance.

DontTakeThePiss · 10/04/2024 18:14

About 20 years - the dishwasher, oven and hob were all replaced a couple of years ago, all appliances are integrated. The units are looking a bit tired, but are in good nick. We're in our 60s, retired, and can't afford to have a new kitchen. (Washer and dryer are less than a year old but are in a utility room)

YeahComeOnThen · 10/04/2024 18:14

I'm not sure. It could be from when the property was built (1960's) or from a refurn anytime after. It's one you'd recognise, I often see it in houses for sale. I'd actually guess 80s/90s but 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

it's beyond a facelift stage as someone's obviously flooded the place in the past as the base units are like splaying weetbix!

I'm redoing the rest of the place first as it's the back entrance & I don't want a new one ruined by stuff being carried in & out nor do I want to be precious about the sink being used for washing paint brushes etc (no utility sadly)

plus it gives me longer to choose what I want! 😂😂😂

tarheelbaby · 10/04/2024 18:16

@CarolinaInTheMorning - Are we from the same place?

My kitchen is 22+ years old, only slightly changed from when we moved here.

Over the years we moved out the clothes' washer to install a d/w and have replaced that once. We have had 3 fridges but always in the same spot. It has a gas hob and Neff electric oven which is falling apart but we have repaired a few times (The front was falling off ...) . We talked about a new kitchen but everything works and as DH reasonably asked, 'Would the dinners taste any better?' When I finally replace it, it will be with good quality, wooden cabinets rather than the chipboard with plastic fronts we have now.

@TemplesofDelight - I love your description of 'barely altered Edwardian'
@Caspianberg - I hope you saved that 1964 receipt and have taped your current one next to it.

SallyWD · 10/04/2024 18:21

Ours is 20 years old, installed by the previous owners. I think it still looks modern and stylish. It's in good condition. I see absolutely no reason to replace it.

LuckysDadsHat · 10/04/2024 18:29

New one is just a toddler at 18 months old. Previous one was 27 years old when we replaced. We moved in and it was falling to pieces, so replaced it 2 years later.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 10/04/2024 19:27

@tarheelbaby Are we from the same place?

My family is originally, the coastal area. But we are farther south now in Georgia. I have noticed your nickname. 😃

Meadowfinch · 10/04/2024 19:40

9 years.

It was installed new, partly in a new extension, after the old extension, diy built by the former owners, with leaky room and blown electrics.

The doors have faded in the sun but otherwise is still pristine.

I'll either revarnish the doors or replace them to tidy it up.

baubletits · 10/04/2024 20:31

6 days old 😁 the one before that? Apparently 15 years old, but it was very dated and falling apart around us. Gutted everything, including taking the old carpet out and stripping the thick textured wallpaper off the walls) and now we have the kitchen of our dreams.

And I have DRAWERS. How could the previous owners think a kitchen without drawers was ever a good idea?!

ApolloandDaphne · 10/04/2024 22:44

Mine is 12 years old and I still love it. We had it repainted recently so it looks fresh and new.

Citygirlrurallife · 10/04/2024 22:58

4 days old (though job not installed yet). We moved in this weekend and part of the Reno work was moving the kitchen from a weird dark corridor (was falling apart as well) to the back of the house in all the lovely light. It’s yellow and oak which I thought might be a bit of a bold choice but I LOVE it and it has micro cement worktops and concrete tiles floors. I got to really hating the dark cramped kitchen in our rental and have never designed or even replaced a kitchen before so it’s been a Labour of love

greengreyblue · 10/04/2024 23:02

5 years. Still love it and so glad we chose certain things that bring me joy. Are you able to change doors or get them re sprayed and update handles?

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 10/04/2024 23:02

About 6 years. It replaced one from the 70s (so over 40 years). I would have kept the old one but we had an extension and it just couldn't fit.

Scourgify · 11/04/2024 18:29

Mine is around forty years old. It is exactly the same units as episodes of “Terry and June”, which finished in 1987.

theteddybear · 11/04/2024 18:38

Mine is 5yrs old. I still like it but wld chose slightly different doors now. Absolutely love my worktops though and generally everything else.

It was 17yrs old when we got rid of it, only know that as know when the house was built.

I'll prob give it a refresh is a couple of yrs. Maybe just change the doors but keep everything else. Well floor too I'm not so keen on it now.

I can't imagine having the same one for 10+ yrs. I know lots of people do though as it's so expensive.

We moved out of our old house after 8 yrs and we had put in a new kitchen not long after we moved in. If I had stayed I wld have got the units sprayed, new tiles and new worktops.
