Chalkboard Wall

Hi!

We have a blank space wall above a sideboard in our kitchen. DP fancies painting a section with chalkboard / blackboard paint to make a noticeboard sort of thing (he saw one in a cafe this weekend).

I’m not against it but wondered if these are a bit dated / going out of style? If anyone has one that looks good and could share pics that would be fab!

Any other interesting suggestions for filling the space? I’ve tried artwork but it doesn’t look quite right, parents suggest a big clock like theirs but again wondered if it was a bit dated?

It’s a plasterboard internal wall, so I’m a bit wary of shelving (if anything too heavy on it) otherwise that would have been my first pick!

Will you not be constantly hoovering up chalk dust.

Can you stand a big mirror/picture/vase/plant on the sideboard, if you're worried about shelves?

Don’t do it, you will regret it. It never looks clean after a while.

Get a family planning board, loads on Etsy. We love ours. All meals, each family members activities, notes

Instead of an oversized clock (which I do think is a bit dated) how about doing time zone clocks? Get multiple identical clocks, make labels for them

The planner is a much better idea but why the obsession with 'dated /going out of fashion'? Surely it's your home (not a show house for a magazine shoot) so should have what you like/love/want in it and stuff everyone else?

I find whiteboards much easier to write on and wipe off

I am in the process of making one. MANY things have gone wrong in it's construction though.

Top tip: Don't use the roll on blackboard peel and stick paper. It just bubbles irritatingly, even on perfectly smooth surfaces.

Another top tip: If you want to use chalk board markers on top of chalk board paint you have to seal it first with sealant spray or else you're stuck with permanent unerasable writing.

Guess how I learned these things 🙄

We had a large chalkboard in our first flat. Friends came around and wrote nice messages on it which increased over time. We fixed them with hairspray and they lasted. It was a lovely thing to have, like living art.

Don't worry about trends. It's a home. Make it yours. Make it timeless. Make it work for the space and the way you live.

The worst thing you can do is make it look like everyone elses home. Take ingredients you like from others homes and create your own recipe.

Our top tip is:
Don't make everything grey.
Respect the building's architecture.
Have nothing in your home that isn't useful, personal or beautiful.

We have a large magnetic board which is painted to match the wall. We stick kids’ artwork and various certificates etc on it.

@minipie hi, May I ask where you bought the board please?

Finally finished our board on Saturday 😂
