Desk / furniture protector?

What’s the best way to protect a brand new white desk/table top (kids bedroom!)? I could get some glass cut but wondering if there is a quicker and cheaper alternative ?

Perspex might be an option.
If you have the box the desk came in you could make a desktop protector from the cardboard. Maybe put a cloth over it.
