Where can I get good quality sofas from?

I'm looking for some new sofas. There is no budget and I want something that is good quality that will last!

I purchased sofology sofas some years ago and they were so awful. I had a 2 year battle with them to get the sofas repaired and eventually returned. I don't want to go through that again.

So ... Where are your sofas from and have they lasted you?

I have the 3 and 4 seater Woodstock from dfs in mint green(? more a duck egg)and they're one of my best investments so far. I bought a year ago and they're such good quality and comfy. Very deep so I can curl up.

My friend recommended DFS too.
personally I scoured Facebook marketplace for excellent condition and searched DFS/ Loaf/ Made.com type sodas and ended up spending £900 instead of about £6k on two as new sofas made to order by an interior designer. It was a gamble as I should have tried them first but they are amazing and I knew they were well made / Top end

John Lewis.

Hideously expensive

TheSuggestedAmendment · 16/12/2023 21:38

If there is actually no budget - ie you can get the best - then George Smith or Howard and Sons.

You could also try Sofa and Chair company. They are one down from the other two but people like them.

Following. New sofas on my agenda for the New Year.

catherinewales · 16/12/2023 21:48

I wouldn't recommend DFS they have been awful for me. Never ever will I buy from them again. I liked scs and I'd go back there tomorrow. The sofas we got for dfs once they was sorted are lovely but they definitely wasn't worth the hassle. I spent hours and hours on the phone to their call centre and waited days for the manager who was less useless to call me back. Spent hours travelling to and from the shop to speak to the useless manager. There is a Facebook page dfs complaints. I'd definitely look that up before you buy.

I have a lovely sofa from Raft. We were nervous to spend the money but very glad that we did.

eastereggblunt · 16/12/2023 22:00

I want to know where to go too. Had 2 velvet sofas delivered from sofa.com this week and am massively disappointed. Lumpy cushions which are uncomfortable and the lumps visible. Also the fabric lining the frame is creased in multiple places, creating crease lines that can be seen and felt through the velvet fabric on one side and across the back. Can't get to speak to a human and no response so far on email. Sigh.....spent £4k on these are they are still no good.

FlyingCherub · 16/12/2023 22:06

I'm in the trade. You want beech/solid wood frames, mesh topped spring units (avoid zigzag/serpentine springs) and a decent guarantee. Any sofa maker worth looking at will offer at least 10 years on structure.

Kingcombe are the higher end but very good quality and part of the Colefax/Fowler group so use their fabrics. Or find a local upholsterer who won't charge you for fancy showrooms.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions! I'm looking for a more modern sofa. I personally love Chesterfield's though but ... The house I have moved into is super modern and I don't think a chesterfield/traditional sofa would look right.

@FlyingCherub - are there any sofa companies I should stay clear of?

Bobbybobbins · 16/12/2023 22:51

We have had next and DFS and been happy with both.

MandyCandy · 16/12/2023 22:52

I know DFS and sofology are owned by the same company. The sofas are really hit and miss from personal experience.

MandyCandy · 16/12/2023 22:53

Anyway if anyone is in the north, there is a good place called James and rose. I thought they only made chesterfield sofas but it looks like they can make anything. I think I'll be going to get a sofa from them.

We got one from Habbio a couple of years ago to replace our 20 year old sofa that was falling apart. We are still very pleased with it, it seems to have been well made and shows no signs of wear so far. habbio.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAsvWrBhC0ARIsAO4E6f9AZVCLSNLoY2kGfl9mRGXdc13C_cvYBFw0jDGmsX848floSCTEbPkaAqegEALw_wcB

AllAroundMyCat · 16/12/2023 22:55

We've had two sofas from DFS.
Just be careful when plunging your hands down the back of them.

I still have the scar from a sticking out screw.

The back cushions curl up very quickly despite regular plumping.

They don't clean well either.

Our Laura Ashley sofa has lasted nigh on twenty years.

You get what you pay for. Definitely.

FlyingCherub · 16/12/2023 22:58

Avoid any chains offering credit, basically. You're paying more for the finance than you are the furniture which is made in China/Far East. And how it meets UK safety standards beats me....!

fitflopqueen · 16/12/2023 23:06

Duresta, would like to change our 2 sofas but 12 yrs on and still like new.

SM4713 · 16/12/2023 23:11

Watching, as need a corner sofa after renovating. No advice I'm afraid.

@eastereggblunt Thats so disappointing!! We had 2 sofa.com Isla sofas delivered about a year ago and they’ve been one of our best purchases so far! They were immaculate when they were delivered and have taken a fair amount over the last year with toddlers in the house and still look fab! Hopefully you get your issues with them sorted 🤞🏼

Delcor. Have had mine since 1985. Reupholstered once around 2009. Highly recommended.

Oak furniture land.

Ooh some of these sofas are lovely! The prints are beautiful!

I might change the theme of the house for these sofas!

Over the last 14 years, we've had 3 dfs sofas. Bought on payment plan over 3 or 4 years, got rid of them before or just after paid off as they've just gone to shit.

Bought a nabru sofa the Friday before lockdown, you wouldn't know anyone even sits on them, the shapes still awesome. The perfect height and depth to protect my back which hasn't gone once in the time we've had it funnily enough.

wish I could have about my perfect mattress.... They're all a heap of shite!

Puffintop · 16/12/2023 23:24

Barker & Stonehouse, John Lewis, Fishpools, Cousins or Rowen Homes.
for cheaper options, DFS, SCS, Furniture Village. The January sales are a good time to get a decent deal.
