Help me find a rug for my large squarish living room.

Hi everyone.

I am useless at home decor so need some advice please.

I live in a newbuild with a squarish living room. The walls are off white and the carpets are cream/beige. We have a large charcoal coloured corner sofa on one side of the room and a oak coloured TV unit on the opposite wall, which is approximately 180cm long. The room looks very plain and bare.

I want to inject some colour into the room and so I'm thinking of getting a multi-colored rug. I want a modern rug that has blues/pinks/greys and greens in as I'm hoping to then match cushions and other accessories to it.

My questions are: would the rug have to be pretty huge so that it fits under all the furniture? Would a large circular rug work? Does anyone know of any rugs that match what I'm looking for? Budget is maz £150.

Also if anyone has any ideas on window decor and wall frames which could work please feel free to advise. I'm just feeling really lost with it all.

I’d go for a rectangular, rather than round rug.

Your colour scheme up to now sounds fairly neutral, so you could probably go with any colours. Do you have a preference, or colour you definitely don’t like.

I've looked on wayfair and dunelm and I know that I definitely want something modern. A colour I definitely don't want is red but I am open to all other colours and really want something bright and multicoloured so that I can draw accent colours from it.

My main issue is size- what size should I be going for? Does it just need to cover the seating space or would it need to go all the way upto the tv unit?

Have a look on eBay. There's loads of eBay shops that do rugs & carpets.

Have a look on Dunelm they do lots of large rugs at reasonable prices and they are excellent quality .

You already have carpet, so I'd say it doesn't have to go right up to the tv unit or under the sofa. Just something biggish in the middle. Will you be having a coffee table in the middle of the room? On the whole I'd be inclined to go with a circular rug in a square room.

Yes we will have a coffee table in the middle. I was also thinking circular but there doesn't seem to be as many options in such a big size so its making it a bit difficult.

I got a 3m x 2m one from onbuy for £35. It's a grey short shaggy one. Apparently they should sit under the fronts of seats/couches 🤷🏼‍♀️ to make it cosier. We haven't "done" our living room yet and we have a short haired dog that casts constantly, so I'm happy with it being cheap. It has actually made a difference to the room tbh.

I have a similar set up , 5m by 6m for the living area and I went for ruggable.

They do varying sizes and the idea was that the rug would cover the area just slightly under the front legs of the sofas at an angle to one another..

Sorry, I didn't see the budget, I spent 600 and they have replaced it 3 times because i couldn't wash stains out

John lewis have lovely rugs..mine wasn't cheap, 500 but its gd quality

You don't need all the legs of furniture to be on the rug but I would suggest that at the very least it goes under your sofa front legs - otherwise the corners will start turning up as people walk on it. Dunelm do good ones. Make sure it goes under the length of your sofa. Nothing worse than a large rug floating around on the floor with no anchor.
