Hi everyone!

Two first time buyers here and so far we've been knocked just about every way we can be with our very slow and painful renovation. We've just got what feels like quite a stretch of a quote for a downstairs area that is 38 sqm. Can anyone advise? It's the two quotes together as one is materials and one is labour. We're in zone 2 London. The engineered wood is V4 brand.

Engineered Herringbone is available at many stores for about 49 pounds/sqm, incl. vat, so that's about half the price. Just shop around for alternatives and order samples. For a fitter, if you can find a trustworthy, ideally non vat registered handyman, outside of London they may charge 150/day, in London maybe 200/day? They'd probably need a week tops, if it's not a super wonky, fiddly layout. That would also more than half fitting costs. I have no idea what 'sausage' means. BTW, the quotes don't seem to include skirting. You'd probably want them to either take off skirting and refitt (if it's a listed feature) or fit new. Herringbone is more expensive to lay than straight planks, so by choosing straight floorboards you could save more and probably find more people able to fit it well and cheaply, or even try a DIY job.

I also have just recently bought my first home and need to replace my flooring throughout. I was thinking about engineered wood herringbone in the living room but have no experience at all regarding it and after looking around at the cost it just wasn't feasible for me so I opted for LVT, and reading NellyBarnes comment it seems like it would be a right olde hassle to fit this myself.

It may not be relevant but I've been searching these forums for the past week or so to get some useful tips on flooring and saw this post in the search so I thought I'd share where I found the cheapest engineered wood in the hope it would help you somewhat (https://flooringking.co.uk/wood-flooring/filters/effect/herringbone/)

I've been researching flooring recently. I've about 80m2 to cover, and aiming to spend less than £25 pms. Hoping to get glue down LVT, Amtico or as similar as possible. I haven't got quotes for fitters yet. There are some offers on at the moment, but not amazing.
