Can I put vinyl flooring over kitchen floor tiles?

Red kitchen floor tiles which I really dislike and make kitchen look dark and dirty as well as super cold under foot.

Do I have to get them up or can I get flooring put over?

Thanks 🙏🏻

How are you going to level it? I.e. the gaps/grout. If you lay vinyl straight on top, it'll tread down into the cracks and ultimately crack. You'd need to find a way of levelling it first. We put vinyl down over floorboards and had that problem - within weeks you could see the pattern of the floorboards as it had been trodden into the gaps between boards.

Yeah you’ll see the tiles. We did it as a temporary measure (3 years on and no change lol) it’s also brutally cold 🤣

You will need to get it screeded

You may get condensation between the two layers. Can’t you paint them?

Was guessing this would be the answer but hoping not. It has an extension where the levelling is already awful but loads of the tiles are cracked and water stained so I guess I'd better get saving 😔. Thanks for the quick answers.

Does that work or is it really temporary and not so good looking?

We did this. You have to ensure you get felt back flooring (as advised to su bu the flooring people) and I used a filler and just filled the grout gaps. Worked great for us.

They put a thin concrete screed over our ugly cold tiles to level the floor. Vinyl was then put directly over it once it had dried. Goodbye nasty floor! Wish we'd done it years ago!

We put vinyl straight over tiles (no levelling) and we didn't get the tile / grout lines come through

Get felt backed (not foam) and it'll be fine

I put vinyl click flooring over my tiles. Roughly filled some big holes where the tiles had broken and were missing but didn't need to do anything with the grout lines etc.
pic attached (wish I'd taken a before!) this was from howdens and has insulation on the back of it.

We have a few broken tiles that need to be stuck down - there are videos on YouTube suggesting you can stabilise the tiles by drilling holes and filling with UPVA glue - it goes underneath and forms a bond and helps keep the tiles stable.
