Hi , we live in a 1948 house. Ex council .. its really not my style but its what we could afford in an brilliant and v expensive area.
i am trying to make the best if the house on a limited budget.. am struggling as i am used to large victorian .( totally out of our price range here)
Ive embraced a mid century vibe as the house was built then .
ive got ercol in the house too as that fits in my view.
we inherited a very dark 90s kitchen .. i wanted to put a 1950 s kitchen in but they were 1000s of pounds , so ive fitted a 1970s orange one which cost £200.
i am now stuck on what colour to paint the kitchen . Its plastered ( got rid of swirly patterned ceilings) . In the old house we had all white walls with vic fireplaces .. so am unused to colour…. Help much appriciated !!

Ooooh love your style! I would go for olive green maybe?
Found a couple of colour pallettes you might like?

You can generally find German vases in charity shops/auctions. I'm in a few mcm groups on Facebook, you can get some great inspiration there. You could also look at materials (blinds, cushions) that are inspired by this era. Glass wear was very popular in this era too.

For me, I am a fan of 'influenced by rather than a direct copy of the era.

I love the suggested palette, but it really depends on the light that your kitchen receives - how much? Where? Olive can be great or dreadful, much depends on the light

Rinkymcdinky · 05/11/2023 21:19

Turquoise.

The kitchen is light near the table and darker near the back .

I think I’d stick with something light coloured unless you have a lot of natural light? Avocado green would go with the orange but it might be too dark.

German Fat Lava pottery is 1970s, you can sometimes pick it up cheaply at car boots or on eNay.

SheikhDjibouti · 05/11/2023 21:26

I remember the 1960s / 1970s as liking “feature walls”, could you paint the chimney breast to match the green in the rug?

I think I’d definitely keep the kitchen a light walls a light neutral colour.

Seaside3 · 05/11/2023 21:28

You have some nice pieces, looking at your original photos.

I'd probably keep it lighter on the walls, allowing your cabinets and furniture to speak for itself. I'd try to find a white with some orange in it, so it doesn't look too stark.

Maybe add darker olive somewhere near your ercol. I used to have those chairs and they sing out against dark blue or dark green.

I love these lights, which would look super cool above your table.

Curtains that have a good mid century vibe would be good too.

I'd not follow MCM too slavishly (and I say that as someone with a house full of vintage furniture). A very light blue with the orange might be nice but try lots of testers because very light blues can look grey in some lights.

There are loads of specialist vintage dealers across the country who sell MCM accessories, you can also find things on etsy and ebay. Worth looking at both to check which has the best choice and price.

LifeofBrienne · 05/11/2023 21:33

Love it, much nicer than the monochrome white/black/steel modern style kitchens! Light coloured walls probably best as it’s not a huge space.

Slipknotted · 05/11/2023 21:36

Those lights are gorgeous- @Seaside3.

OP, what aspect does your kitchen have?

Misspacorabanne · 05/11/2023 21:41

Ahh op it’s fabulous!
Not much help on the colour! But I love the style!

Seaside3 · 05/11/2023 21:44

@Slipknotted isnt it gorgeous? I kinda want it now, but as much as I love mcm I don't love it in my victorian house.

Rinkymcdinky · 05/11/2023 22:00

These vibes.

I'd say mid century furniture is more 40s - 60s style, so the colours aren't so much from the 70s, but a bit more muted with some bright colours added in.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 05/11/2023 22:17

I'd go for a vintage feel wallpaper on at least one wall, with a white background and paint the other walls white. This will make your vintage pieces stand out without making the space feel dark.

MrsElsa · 05/11/2023 22:20

The trend right now is a very minimalist take on MCM. Unless you really like colour I would not be painting any walls!! The kitchen units stand out on their own and look perfectly stylish.

Agree with pp get some nice big wall art and that will be plenty.

Timetoaction · 05/11/2023 22:25

Ive got this wallpaper !
i was unsure if ot wd peel off as i cook a lot ! I domt think it would wotk next to cabinets as hey are near cooker.. maybe opposite wall?
